Gav's EV Conversion - Living with an EV - IV from Gav on Vimeo.

If you aren't familiar with Gav, he's been a long time contributing member of DIYElectricCar under the name of "kiwiev." Gav converted a 1987 Mitsubishi Tredia last year and has been since making films about his conversion, his lifestyle and other EV conversions. This video is the fourth in the series of lifestyle videos. Gav shows a few changes around the house and gets some live status updates from 3 different active conversions. BIts of interest from this video include the Curtis and Kelly controller size comparison as well as a fantastic 2 minute video showing Gav's conversion in totality from start to finish.

t home Gav shows a few new things that have changed including a dedicated charging socket for the car outside and a very eco-friendly heat pump inside. Gav notes in the video that even while gas and petrol prices continue to drop there is still a very high interest in electric vehicles and conversions. He visits two local garages to get updates on their conversions and one garage over the internet. What's very interesting that is different from many conversions is that two out of three of the conversions shown in this video are using Lithium Ion batteries, which were previously too cost-prohibitive to use.

The first conversion shown is a Plymouth Laser which had started out AC but switched to DC for cost reasons. It will run the standard 144v pack configuration but will have 160 Lithium Ion cells. The second conversion is a Toyota MR2 which is totally gutted and will be a 144v Lead-Acid system running a Netgain Warp motor off of a Kelly controller. Last but not least is the remote interview showing a Ford Capri which is 98% complete. The Capri will have an Netgain Impulse motor, Curtis controller and 45 90AH Lithium Ion batteries.

Bummer about the rust issue! Can't wait to see your next conversion. Actually, the next one should be cheaper, since you can canibalize the parts from this one. Anyway! Looks great, and I love the quality of the new camera! It's great. Thanks for the video!

When people say this, what is the meaning? I've read that twice now. Do people find the Kelly deficient in some way because it's smaller? Is the Kelly better because it's smaller? I'm just wondering if someone will elaborate beyond "interesting."

Also, I noticed on the excellent quality of the video, I don't hear the whine that the curtis controller used to have when Gav put it into his tredia. Has the whine gone away? Do the Curtis controllers need a break in period?

    Thanks in advance:

Gav, nice work on the video. However, the site Vimeo is seemingly slow compared to youtube, will you put this also on youtube?

Great work and liked the cake. I thought you were going to enjoy it yourself, but the car had all the fun. haha

Keep the videos coming. Such great info, entertainment and insight all in each video we all want more..more and MORE!.
To add, your wife has the most amazing steady hands to keep the video cam perfectly stable. Great job on both your work.
Hope to see a whole new line of videos coming from you soon.

So Gav is married to a tripod now?

I thought the comparison was "interesting" just because of the massive size difference. They have nearly identical ratings but the Kelly controller is 1/3 the size. I've heard of that curtis controller overheating if not mounted to a large, heat-dissipating plate but does the Kelly have any heat problems?

I really wish I had time to go through all of Gavin's videos. What he is doing is just amazing. Sooner or later we are going to see him hosting his own TV show (and get paid for it).

    MARK MY WORDS!!!!

    Here's to you, Gavin.

Thanks for the kind words guys, and thanks for the awesome write-up Rob!
I'm sitting at home here nursing a very sore toothache today waiting for my dentist appointment. Ow. Teeth sure can be painful. I should just get the whole lot removed and replaced with a set of falsies!
    Ow.
I must have eaten too much vanilla and asparagus cheesecake I guess and no my teeth are falling apart.

Are dentists in the USA and Canada as expensive as they are down here? I think I'm the reason my dentist drives a Merc.

I busted both upper front teeth and it was over 2 grand to have them both crowned (ceramic), I suspect the price is comparable in the developed world. At least they're strait now.
