    Hi Rmacey,
who did you get the kit from? I'm just starting out investigating my conversion, and I want to know who is good to get a kit from.

    Free at last

Nice job! Congratulations on finally getting rid of the ice! Had some similar problems in my car, Swedish climate has not been nice to my volvo 440 for 19 years... Had to cut off at least 3 bolts with a saw, at very uncomfortable angles. Also managed to destroy some tools as I used 1 meter long lever for more torque...

no, use a drill bit that is the same size as the head, drill the head off leaving the stud (rest of the bolt) in the trans.
you can get bolt remover like this
    http://local.content.compendiumblog....Bolt%20Out.JPG
the thing is, you can't get the bolt remover on the head because of the CV, so cut it off and take the axle off then remove the stud.

if you cant get it out, then cut it off flush and just make sure the other 7 bolts are good and solid when you put the axle back in. I've raced with an axle that only had 3 of them, it'll be fine.

I've got lots of extras if you need any, just let me know.

the easiest way to remove it is drill the head off, I've got 30 or so axle bolts to spare if you need some.
If you're talking about the big axle bolt, the best is to soak it daily for 3 or 4 days with PB blaster, and then use an impact gun.
I'm talking about the small (8mm) bolts that go through the CV at the transmission. I may need replacements. I'm new at this. You mention drilling the head off. Do you mean cut the head off and then drill the remainder out?

I think your big problem is here, not with that bolt.

I wonder how easy is it to find replacement parts for a 1985 VW Cabriolet?

I've taken about 15 rabbit motors out, they come out easiest from the bottom, and with the trans too.
the trick is to put something under the motor like a furniture dolly and the lower the motor down to it.
I can lift the front up by myself but I'm a big guy. get 3 people to help you, one on each front fender and one in front and lift while the 4th pulls the motor out. easy!

We used to use come-alongs from the rafters to raise the front end of the car enough to slide the engine out. Did it that way for a few Civics and CRX.

I am trying to take the tranny and engine out together. I'd drop it but I don't think I can raise the car high enough (well I'd need a new jack and jack stands).

This might be a little too late, but it looks like that engine is easier removed from the bottom. Put some blocks under the engine and jack the car up off the engine. Its usually done with a lift, so it might be difficult with just a jack.

I'll give that a try. (but it's tough to move the engine forward or back until it clears the engine mounts.).

looks like if u can locate your chains closer to the firewall, you might be able to get it to lean forward. maybe even just prying the top forward with a 2x4 will do it. They got it in, it will come out. Really just looks like its leaning too far back.
