I am an ordinary guy who needs an electric car. I have a short commute to work and only do short journeys at the week end. Also I am too cheap to spend $35K + on a Chevy Volt or Nissan leaf.
So I have decided to convert an old car to an electric car. Let the journey commence!

I have been slacking

OK I had some time off well quite a bit recently but I am now back in the saddle again. I am stuck on some problems.
1. Had to make the clutch adapter plate.
2. The gear box bell housing sit 20mm off the current adapter plate. So I have to fabicate a new one.

On the positive side I think I have a great deal on my lead acid batteries.

I got the lead out!

Posted 04-14-2012 at 11:35 AM by Fatboynotslim (Fatboynotslims 2002 Saturn SL1 EV1)

Hi,
I have not posted for a while and have not worked on the car for a while. But I made up for it this weekend. Pulled out the drive shafts and finally after a lot of huffing and puffing got the engine and gearbox out.

Also thanks for all the comments, very helpfull.

I bought myself a hoist

As I think I am getting close to pulling out the engine. I decided to buy myself a cherry picker. Cost me $175 secondhand off craigslist.

God bless Rich Pin he has put on You tube video on everything you need to do to remove to get the engine out of a Saturn SL1. I would be lost without him.
I have a Haynes manual but it like gobbledegook! So I just do what old Rich Pin say to do this. I have now removed the alternator and the starter motor. All the wire hareness is clear and just because I was in the mood I removed the exhaust.I also removed the intake manifold.

Little and often

Posted 03-13-2012 at 05:36 PM by Fatboynotslim (Fatboynotslims 2002 Saturn SL1 EV1)

Hi,
I found out where the battery tray bolt was, in the wheel arc? So I removed that, the serpentine belt and AC unit. Also I scrouged from work some baby 12V sealed rechargable batteries which were going to be recycled. but still have some charge. I think I will be able to use them to test the system some way.
I am now reading up on building my own desulfator just for fun. I found some info on the web and it should be fun.
