Hi Folks, I'm new to the forum and thought I'd introduce myself.

I got involved in electric vehicles this year as I put together an electric bike, I've always had an interest in them and the bike got me started. I put 1000 miles on it this year displacing about 37 gallons of diesel and saving me not just money on fuel but also on bridge tolls.
Here is a link to my project on endless sphere:

http://endless-sphere.com/forums/vie...hp?f=6&t=11493

I considered trying to use my ebike though the winter but riding it in the cold and rain doesn't seem practical, I have to take some oddball roads to get to work which would not be that safe either. So with that in mind I've been considering my options to completely rid myself of my daily driver car (an 85 300D mercedes).
After reading through the wired.com article I am considering doing a bug electric conversion. I am just going through the numbers and costs right now, plus some of the drivetrain issues. I am pretty much set on lead acid batteries for energy storage, they are inexpensive and have enough range and lifespan for me.

My background is actually chemistry but now I'm employed as a mechanical engineer and I specialize in biotech. I also have electronics experience and have/had my own small business building and selling an aftermarket electronics product for porsche 911's.

Thanks!

The reporter definitely has it wrong about the classification,
unfortunately. There must be at least 500 of the specific vehicles
produced to be classified as "Production Class" in land speed racing.
There is just one prototype Lightning and I _think_ there is just one
prototype of the MotoCzysz bike that is competing. There certainly
have not been 500 of each of them manufactured as required for AMA,
FIM, and SCTA production classification.

No doubt they are both setting AMA and FIM electric motorcycle
records, of course. Just not "production class" records.

The J1772 Plug and Socket listed here
http://shop.transatlanticelectricconversions.com/main.sc DO NOT include
communications electronics. I am working on that but as of right now do not
have that available. Stay tuned.

These plugs and sockets can be used to upgrade your vehicle to this new
J1772 standard and Dennis you scared me to death that retail EV chargers can
then be used by RVs as well in a parking lot near you.... That is a
possibility, of course.

I have the circuit detail I will post on the site under the socket so that
you can see it and know the details of what you would need to do to install
these in your personal or business applications.
Wow, suddenly the connectors are available for $125 "Car Receptacle" and
$450 "Supply plug" (with cord?) But who is selling the electronic package to
make it work with the "Charging Stations" in town? Without the Pilot signal
management circuitry the J1772 simply doesn't work.

<<<<<<<<<Here is a manual implementation' but the one KHz Square wave at 0
to +6 also needs to be present for J1772 compatible
chargers.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
-P9279C632.aspx>
this site is selling a "Spa' disconnect, although manual It is
the perfect manual implementation for a at home charger supply, and simple,
waterproof, and low priced. It is a simple manual implementation, including

the GFCI protection and also includes a manual disconnect all in a proper
electric rated box, at a reasonable price, at only $120, to connect the
charging outlet or cord to then run another wire to power panel and a 240
volt 30 to 60 A circuit breaker. And it is "Rainproof ! " I've paid more
for the 240 v. GFCI ! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>*
*.
And, Rush, what does your adapter connect to? and which chargers is it going
to be compatible with? Also, do you expect me to cut off the plug on a
charger in warranty?

If I convert my EV to a J1772 Receptacle, then don't I have to also convert
my garage or carport charging outlet to J1772 as well? so the package is
$575 plus electronics on both ends???
> Hello all,
>
> I'm in the process of making up a J1772 adapter box. What kind of plug
> (twist lock or straight blade) do you want at the end that plugs into your
> vehicle? This is 240 vac only, no 120. Or do you just want a pigtail (2
>

What about RV Power connections? These have been available in 110/220V sets
for years, in a variety of weather resistant/twist lock profiles.

RV's typically have one power "inlet" that can be powered by 110v-30A or
220v-50A depending on what cord you use... I have SEEN an RV with two
plugs, one for 110v-15A and another for 110-30A/220V-50A... If that doesn't
fit our bill, I don't know what would...

Just because the inlet can TAKE 30/50A doesn't mean we have to use it...I
would be happy to use such a connection at 15A at 110/220v. If I set my
charger up properly to only take 15A it would just ignore the extra
capacity...I might have a switch/dial/etc that when I was at a "high power"
location to use the 30/40/50 Amps available, but the Plug would remain the
same....
I am sure that there are "marine" versions of the same thing with better
weather and corrosion resistance.

Hello, now that my first EV is pretty well out of the way, I'm looking for
ideas for my next or potentially what type of vehicle I could retofit. I
have a few ICE vehicles that I could convert or look at converting. I don't
have a huge budget however I have been known to be thrifty and finding
cheaper alternatives. Here is my list, what would you pick?

PWC: I have two, one works farily well (99 Seadoo GTX limited) however the
other (94 Polaris SL 750) is troublesome at best. Right now it has an upper
end misfire which I can't seen to diagnose (or want to spend any more time
diagnosing)

Pro: taking ICE motor out of Polaris and beating it mercilessly for all the
grief it has given me would be very self-rewarding :-) Seriously, I am the
point where it breaks down so much that EVing it would be a more reliable
solution. Parts for these motors are starting to dry up as well.

Cons: I really haven't seen any fast electric PWCs out there. The power to
weitght ratio for EVing this type of vehicle is daunting and likely
expensive to overcome. Then again, if went 10-20 miles a hour and had a
fairly short run time wouldn't be terrible either, at least it would
actually move instead of being broke most of the summer. Other Cons of
course is an EV pack mostly below the water line, getting fried is always a
con :-)

Another Pontoon boat: Build a bigger one, this time out of a aluminum base
and with real pontoons.

Pro: more people to be able to take out, potentailly faster and longer
range, second time around following a good outcome of the first etc. Might
be able to build stong and fast enugh to haul down to the ocean harbor for
cruises there.

Con: already have one, would have to sell b4 I get that all important wife
buy in :-) More power usually means real controllers that put out high freq
noise that may keep patrons and wildlife away.

Car: I have a 91 Toyota Mr2 Turbo and 02 Tundra 4x4 or I could aquire
another to build over.

Pro: The MR2 is an ideal vehicle to EV because of its mid mounted engine,
room for battery packs fore and aft, fairly light weight. Kickingas Mr2 is
an excellent example

Con: Mr2 is in excellent shape, works well, would be hard to cut up due to
emotional bond to it :-) I beleive Truck is too heavy to retrofit and 4
wheel drive components would put damper on getting any range.

ATV: I don't have any but I have seen a few around for sale that could be
had cheaply that are sproket driven and ICE dead :-) My road is right
across a rails to trails access point which has a flat smooth surface, ideal
for a 2wd machine.

Cons: I don't actually have a vehicle yet. Traill is open to ATVs however
there is a lot of of controversy over them being on the trails with
their noise. Perhaps a chance to showcase a quiet EV alternative? Other
con is weatherproofing.

Thoughts, choices?

Thank you!
Dan
