so I'm building an electric scooter for my nephew for christmas, I started out with an e300 razor with two dead batteries that was rusting away in my backyard and have striped it down, cut and lengthened the frame to fit two more batteries and under the deck, added a 48 volt controller and larger motor from a larger chinese scooter that was given to me. The new controller doesnt have a brake saftey input, so I want to add a relay to the motor output to open when the brake is depressed. I was thinking of using an automotive 12v relay since they are common and I would also like to add some small 12v lights that come on with power on. should I get/make some sort of small dc-dc convertor or just hook up each one to a different battery which may get them out of balance? which brings me to the next question, would it be worth it to make a set of mini battery balancers for this rig? The charger charges them in a string so I guess they will eventually will get out of balance.

Now that was one radically sweet looking machine!!!

They didn't have much on performance information or the programming of the controller like I was hoping.

Was said to have a 60 mile range (if I recall correctly) - as well as more than 100 MPH top end (a lot faster than I would have thought given the apparent gearing)..
My eNinja project may have to wait now!!! :)

I suppose I haven't really combined the batteries since they are on a double pole double throw switch. It is really two separate power sources.
I am using SLA's and Nicads. The SLA pack is 24 volt 12 AH and the Nicad is 24 volt 8 AH.
This morning it is 1 degree Celsius or 34 degrees Fahrenheit and there is the first snow of the year on the ground.
I began my morning trip using my old SLA pack that is probably down to about 6 AH. I haven't tested it yet (I'd like to put the batteries on my good charger and run the de-sulfator a bit)
In the summer I had been getting about 8 kilometers out of this pack but this morning I only got 3. So I flipped the switch and used the Nicad pack for the remaining 1 k.
Yesterday I needed to do some running around for parts and tools. I had my good SLA pack and the Nicad. I tried to use the Nicad as much as possible. The first thing that I noticed is that it produces noticably less punch than the SLA when going uphill. So I used the SLA for all the uphill portions of the 11 kilometer round trip.
I was really pleased that I was able to use the Nicad for the majority of the way and I did not run out of juice in that battery although it must have been pretty close. The SLA was still fresh.
The reason for the power difference is the size of the packs. 8 AH pack at 3C is 24 amps and 12 AH pack at 3C is 36 amps.

Hi,

I have a 1987 Honda GL500 motorcycle. I got it as a starter bike, I now have a better bike for fun and normal driving. I'm considering the GL500 as an electric bike conversion, but I don't know if it's worth bothering with.

Here's some pertinent information:
500cc v-twin, 9500 rpm redline, bolt-on transmission, shaft drive. So I'm thinking it might be feasible to keep the transmission and use a cheaper motor that isn't so high high torque/low RPM like most bike conversions I see.

BTW, I've been a member of this forum for quite a while, so I know about the normal observations about transmissions. This is just a set of data points, I'm not married to the idea of keeping the tranny, or even the bike.

It's not really a very good bike. It's a cruiser bike for people who are afraid of motorcycles, and so it doesn't have the frame stiffness you would want in a regular sport bike. My other bike makes this one feel like nothing much.

It also needs suspension work, both front and back. The parts are no longer available from Honda, and the bike's list price is currently about twice what the cost of fixing it would be.

The engine is good, so it might make good money on ebay.

So what I have in mind is a commuter for work. 20 miles each way, almost exactly. I would like to go 3-phase AC (or PMAC, or BLDC) if I can, but since this is my first rodeo that's not critical. Edit: I forgot, top speed 55 mph, maybe half the distance. The rest is 45 or so.

I would also like to stay away from lead-acid, this is more important than going brushless. LiFE batteries, or A123 I would guess. I'm familiar with RC models and LIPO's, so the charging and shock/fire hazards are familiar.

Another edit: I don't know if I should consider this bike as a conversion, or if I should ebay the parts, or if I should try to sell it whole. I don't think it would go for more than a few hundred dollars as a whole bike.

Thanks

Electric Motorcycle Wins Race Against Normal Motorcycles

Author: Mike Werner | Location: Normandy, France
Via: FFM

It was bound to happen, but this is pretty quick. With electric motorcycles gaining not only in
popularity, but also in power and range, they are starting to compete with their fuel-guzzling
counterparts. There have been several races, from high profile ones like the TT of the Isle of Man,
to small local races, all performed by electric motorcycles. But in all these races, there's
been only electric motorcycles. Electric against electric. So their own race category; electric.

But in a small provincial town in France, Gironville Click for map, they were holding an official
FFM (French Motorcycle Federation) motocross race, like they do every year. One of the last races
on the program, is a free-for-all, where motorcycles ranging from 250cc to 450cc race around the
track, scramble fashion.

The difference in this race was that electric motorcycles also participated in their won category;
electric. Zero Open link in a new window and Quantya Open link in a new window both went to the
event with 5 motorcycles, 4 for Quantya and 1 for Zero. The importer of Zero motorcycle had not
heard of the challenge until 2 weeks before the race, so he scrambled to put together a racing
package, bike, support crew and rider.

So last 18 October, in front of thousands of spectators, Thomas Aubry on a Zero MX electric
motorcycle set out for 2 heats. The first heat was so-so due to a bad start, he ended in a 13th
overall position, which already was not bad, considering he was racing against "normal" motorcycles.

But in the 2nd heat, after already having won the electric category, he went flat out and beat
all other competitors, including all "normal" motorcycles. Even the 450's were not able to keep up
with the torque and maneuverability of the electric motorcycles. He started in 13th position, and
at the 1st curve he was in 5th position, followed by 3rd position right after that. When he went
over the finish line, he was in 1st.

Amazing! Granted, Aubry wasn't up against the Gods of motocross, but he was up against folks who
have been racing for years.
