Hi Folks, I'm new to the forum and thought I'd introduce myself.

I got involved in electric vehicles this year as I put together an electric bike, I've always had an interest in them and the bike got me started. I put 1000 miles on it this year displacing about 37 gallons of diesel and saving me not just money on fuel but also on bridge tolls.
Here is a link to my project on endless sphere:

http://endless-sphere.com/forums/vie...hp?f=6&t=11493

I considered trying to use my ebike though the winter but riding it in the cold and rain doesn't seem practical, I have to take some oddball roads to get to work which would not be that safe either. So with that in mind I've been considering my options to completely rid myself of my daily driver car (an 85 300D mercedes).
After reading through the wired.com article I am considering doing a bug electric conversion. I am just going through the numbers and costs right now, plus some of the drivetrain issues. I am pretty much set on lead acid batteries for energy storage, they are inexpensive and have enough range and lifespan for me.

My background is actually chemistry but now I'm employed as a mechanical engineer and I specialize in biotech. I also have electronics experience and have/had my own small business building and selling an aftermarket electronics product for porsche 911's.

Thanks!

Electric motorcycle pioneer Matt Dieckmann dies in traffic accident

I'm sure some of you may have heard by now, but I wanted to post, as he was a friend of mine.

Matt Dieckman, of electricracebikes.com, was killed on August 30th in a 2-vehicle crash. He was riding a prototype electric motorcycle down the road when a Prius failed to yield to oncoming traffic and turned in front of Matt. Matt hit the passenger side of the Prius and was killed.
News Article here:
http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20100830/ARTICLES/100839979?Title=Steele-Lane-closed-after-fatal-motorcycle-crash-

Many of you have heard about the TTXGP races this year, and his name should sound familiar. Matt, along with rider Mike Hannas, entered into all 4 of the US TTXGP races. They had a podium finish for 3rd at Infineon Raceway earlier this year, the first TTXGP race in North America. He was a great individual with a strong passion for electric vehicles. At the time of his death, he was riding a prototype vehicle that had been a fully functioning gas motorcycle just a week or so prior.

I've set up a fund in memory of Matt. Every little bit helps, please help if you can
http://www.giveforward.org/Matt-Diec...neral-Expenses

This is to help his family and friends with any funeral arrangements, fees, etc. Whatever is left I'd like to suggest that we put towards an award in his honor to help other grassroots electric motorcycle race teams get started.

Please repost anywhere you can. Get this out to friends, family, coworkers, other motorcycle enthusiasts.

Thanks,
Travis Gintz

Hello all,

My name is Luke. I'm 22 and reside in the suburbs of Chicago. I have been around cars since I can remember. I enjoy a nice project as the creativity is endless and the end result can be very rewarding.

I've mostly been into older BMW's and although i've owned 25+ cars since I've been 16 only 1 was something other than a bmw. I currently have a 95 and 98 m3. The 98 was a huge project i tackled and fabbed up a turbo system which yielded 604whp on 93 octane. From a 2.8L engine.

Here is a couple pics of the 98.

Anyways, I'm looking for a new project and that's what brought me here :D One of the cars I had in the past was a 1980 BMW 323i (euro spec.) I miss that car and have been thinking about getting another one to replace my current 95. Although this time I'd like to get a shell and go electric. The inspiration for this is the white zombie that I've seen videos of on youtube.

The project is a bit intimidating as my knowlege mostly consits of large fuel injectors, cutting and welding piping etc. I've never felt very confident with the wires...

I hope my stay at this forum will yield some gained knowledge. I'll try not to ask too many newb questions and will mostly focus on reading/searching for now.

Cheers!

Luke G.

I had a lady plow thru a parking lot because she was going to fast to make the intersection and in the process totaled out my chevy 2005 cavilar with me in it. Thank god It was not a direct hit. Now I am in the market for car and I am getting $5000 dollars pay off (Yes its not much but nothing I can do about it.) for my car from the insurance company which I want to invest in converting a donar car to an electric car. I would perfer to make it a hybrid with a generator but right now I can wait on that.

Im in sort of a hurry because I am without a vechicle but I told my self my next car would be a ev. I looked at the kits and decided I liked the 120 volt kits. I want to convert a light van because I have a wife and two rug rats. Could anyone line me out on where to get a good cheap conversion kit that will do highway speeds and what is the best way to get a good donar vechicle. I talked to the u pull it and pick and pull it salvage yards today and they were pretty expensive and did not want to sale me a vechicle without the engine. So this is where I am at. I can do basic electricronics but I am not very mechanical though I have a feeling I will have to learn a thing or two. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

I am not into perpetual motion, but I just watched a national geographic show about the hoover dam and it made me come up with a physics question.

If you link an upper and lower water reservoir together with a turbine generator between the two and then use siphon tubes to direct water back into the upper reservoir, does this create an infinite flow of water? I would expect no due to some hydrostatic physics that is far above my education. What is the explanation for why this hypothetical does not work in the real world? I drew a diagram to better show what I am trying to explain.

Hello. I have been doing some searching here but haven't found an answer to my question. How good would a golf card be when used as a basis for an "on the highway" EV? I was thinking that a larger 4 passenger golf cart with a lightweight body attached would be a low cost way to put an EV on the road. However I don't know much about golf carts. I'm thinking if they can carry golfers with bags, then travel around 18 holes, they must have a decent range. Maybe the power could be tweaked a bit. Larger wheels for more speed....
Appreciate your thoughts. THANKS
