I'm new to the forum and I'm looking to do a conversion. I have been interested in the concept for about 2 years now. But since I'm only 2 yrs removed from college and I still have a hefty bill to pay off and I'm saving for a house, I don't have to capital needed right now. So until I can get some cash together I am trying to learn as much as I can about the subject. I just came across this site a few weekes ago and I figured it was a good place to learn from some seasoned veterns.

I currently work for the state of FL as a forester. I from Raleigh, NC but I move to Jacksonville, FL in Feb of 2008. I have experience with small engines (like portable pumps and chainsaws) and I helped my friend in college build his 350 and put it in an '85 Camaro. I had an apprenticeship with Siemens in HS were I learn a lot about eletronics, but that was 10yrs ago so I'm a bit rusty.

I would like to find someone close to me that I can learn from. Maybe there is someone close to J'ville that is currently working on an EV that I can lend a hand and pick up some useful knowledge. I'm not affraid to get my hands dirty.

I look forward to hearing about everyones builds.

It uses Sanyo Li-ion Batteries but only half the amount of Batteries as the Tesla has, yet does the same range. What the top speed is I do not know they have not said. It took 13 hours from start to finish, Most roads in Japan the speed limit is only 40Kph so please understand why it took 13 hours to travel 555 Kilometers. The top speed on the Freeways is only 90Kph.

It was a normal Daihatsu that was converted to EV and running a DC Motor.

There is 5 companies here in Japan making or converting EVs. I only found out today after looking for over 2 years ... There is also 2 EV racing clubs that have F1 type cars that are 100% EV and go like the clappers!:eek:

I will be undergoing my first electric vehicle to do no less than complete the Baja 1000 in 2010 (2009 starts in a few days, little too late for that :).

I race quads for fun here in Arizona. I roasted my motor which I just view as an opportunity to do something different with it. I've wanted to go electric for awhile, well here's my chance.

I am teaming up with a couple of other quad racers who have Baja racing experience. One of them has an EE and ME who have already voiced a desire to join the team to assist with the details, now I need to glean through what's available so I can start with components that will get us where we want to go without having to reengineer everything 5 times between now and when the flag drops.

So here I am! Looking for advice, suppliers and sponsors that will help us become the first team to complete the Baja 1000 in an all electric vehicle, though my goal is to win :) Completing is a great accomplishment, to win would be phenomenal!

I have been fantasizing about converting a Dodge Neon or similar domestic, front wheel drive car to all electric. Drawing on my industrial background this is my initial concept:

Yaskawa F-7 230VAC AC drive maybe 7.5 or 10HP
Marathon Black Max motor (4 pole/6pole?, 7.5HP/10HP?)
25-28 12V batteries

All of this is just off the top of my head. I am hoping that this forum will give me data and details to fully flush out my design.

This is my first post. I have been becoming very interested in EVs lately. My main car is a Prius, and I have been looking at getting a NEV, possibly a Zenn or a "golf cart" with solar roof. But, then I read more and more info on people creating their own EVs, and found this forum.

On the main page there is a guy (EVTV or whatever) that converted a Porsche 356 into an EV. I think I would like to do the same.

I know there are several ways to do the Porsche, be it a kit car based on a VW Beetle pan or some companies use custom tube frames. I've seen used 356 kitcars on eBay for under $10,000.

This is my question:

How do tax credits work on DIY electric cars? If I buy a kit car without an engine and retrofit it with EV components, can I only get a credit for the cost of the components? What if I buy the vehicle turnkey with EV components already in it, can I then get the credit % for the full amount of the vehicle?

I have an idea, not sure if it will ever work, but I need help understanding a few things before really designing my future ride.

What is the diff between KWh and KW when it comes to range etc. I know how to understand HP with an ICE, but how does that work with an EV? I've seen way less horses being touted as equivalent to a 6 cyl ICE having like 230hp. I'm not exactly much of a car guy either, I'm just a dreamer at this point willing to learn. I understand torque is 100% at 0 mph with EVs, is that where the difference is? If I need a car to go about 75mph to 85mph tops (living in North Texas we have a ton of high speed roads out here) and maybe a Ford Escape Man. Trans. some year, what kind of power do I need? How many batteries? If I put in a diesel tractor engine for series charging, would that even be possible? Would I have to redesign the wheel and the laws of physics to get this to work properly? I know that diesels have way more torque and can do a similar job to a gas ice with less fuel etc and the big stink has always been the big stink with diesels. My wife's Golf 109 hp diesel gets 35mph combined here in North Texas and has a much smaller engine than my 4 cyl Ford Escape getting 153hp getting 18-23mph.

I'm most interested in what I can do to get distance, etc. If I can charge Sealed Lead Acid/Gel whatever batteries when they are getting to a certain point, and run on combined fuel and batts I figure I can still do way better than if I'm running pure gas. I could be wrong, but I figure I can also plug the car in for 20 miles or something range. That gets me one way to school, or to the gym and back, and several trips to the grocery store. I do drive more than 29 miles per day, since North Dallas is sprawling huge. Yet I figure I can do a lot better than what I'm doing currently with at least some electricity.

Also pulse charging. I heard about that on EVCast and thought it was interesting and if it were small enough to put into a car would make the diesel run that much less. As said before though, I'm a little clueless when it comes to physics which I passed with a C in college some 7 years ago.
