I, too, have just started on this site and didn't realize there were tolerance issues here. What did they teach in school about stupid questions?

I found this white paper, "Torque and Horsepower -- A Primer" at www.vettenet.org/torquehp.html. It illustrates torque conversion formulas. Feedback welcome.

My stupid question is where can I find a 300kW motor with a 500 mile life span and a 4 hour charge? Judging by the work I have found on the site already, this request seems to be a holy grail of the moment.

I agree that efficiency is very important (look at the pc, laptop and smartphone technologies) but performance and reliability sell cars and finance innovation. Also, I am researching superchargers (they could be good for another 75kW) and I wonder if anyone has focused on transmissions. The whitepaper makes the argument that "It is better to make torque at high rpm than at low rpm, because you can take advantage of "gearing"".
