Default Contactors

I've been doing some research on which contactors to use.
I assumed i would want to use the contactors that have coils operated at 12 volts since that is the accessory voltage for the system, but the prices on the 12V contactors seems really high for what seems to be a big powered switch.

The 24v contactors seem to be more reasonably priced, but how am i supposed to operate a 24V N/O contactor with a battery system running at 12V?

Is there something i am missing, i dont really understand the whole concept in the first place. I know this is the device that is the master separator between the controller and the batteries, but why do they have to be so expensive?

Ian
