>Since we got one of them there TV dishes a few months ago, I've been doing searches for EV related shows. Back in August I recorded this episode and was surprised to see Matt Graham and his car named Joule Injected. The last 10 minutes of this one hour show features Shawn Lawless showing up with a 250 pound pack of A123 Systems cells (one of three from his rail?) at Matt's shop to replace Joule's 1000 pounds of Orbs. They install the pack and go to the drag strip in order to try and beat Plasma Boy's White Zombie record...

Speaking of Planet Green, is the G Word show about Power of DC online
anywhere? Canceled our digital cable just weeks before that show came on,
wasn't thinking.. Haven't been able to find it online anywhere.

I just captured this on the DVR. Too bad the start up controls gave so
much trouble. Too bad the pack couldn't stay in the car just a little
longer ;-) Kinda like the Zombie being lent the Li-ion for a day and then
gone as quickly as it went in.

So I was wondering, Matt, or Shawn if you're listening, what motor voltage
were you trying to pump in when you noticed the light show? And what rear
ratio are you running Matt? I have not hit that limit yet, and I hope to
get as close to it as I can without going over ;-)

Mike,

A few things that I don't think were seen in the show.

Matts' car was set up to run a low voltage zilla which was not
compatible with my A123 pack. Also, he was set up to run series
parallel shifting, which is a feature my OJ dragster hairball does not
have. We opted in the very short time we had to rewire the car to use
my hairball and high voltage Zilla, and run parallel motor wiring. As I
recall we had to drop the motor to change the wiring. Hindsight is
20/20 and we may have been better running the motors in series but the
car was extremely light and we opted for the higher voltage. Definitely
would have been better adding a second high voltage Zilla from OJ, but
it was your typical, no time left, get it to the track, kind of night.
The wiring error was a simple one, but one that kept sneeking past our
efforts in the dark to find it. Also, due to lack of time we did not
have time to charge the pack at all between runs.
Still it was a great day and night in the South Florida heat. Matt, do
you recall the voltage setting? I'm thinking around 180 - 200. I
think the amps were set at 2000 ( 1000 per motor) for the last run.

By the way Matt, I still owe you a new card table after we destroyed
yours using it to carry the battery pack into our trailer.

Shawn Lawless

Thanks Shawn, I know the difficulties troubleshooting the startup procedure
on the Zilla, especially with S/P switching. I can only imagine trying to
accomplish it in the dark the night of the races. My motors are getting to
about 90V (each) and 2000 A during series mode. After the switch to parallel
they are typically getting up to the Max voltage limit I set (I'm up to 180V
now). I'm thinking of running up to the 190V that George Hamstra says
should be OK. At 105 mph we're turning ~4500 rpm. Its hard know where
that triple point of Voltage, Current and RPM are for a flashover.
Anyway thanks for the show and loaning Matt that set of lithiums. I notice
they aired Joule Injected's famous parking lot burnout in front of the cops,
that was awesome.
