A few months ago, there was some discussion about whether mounting lithium
cells on their side could cause problems. There wasn't a definitive yes or
no answer.

I have seen some manufacturers data sheets that say any position except
upside-down is ok, others don't even mention mounting position.
I have also seen the pics of the internals of several prismatic cells. The
connection of the individual pouches to the output terminals looks poorly
done. It appears to be just a pair of small screws and nuts and a small
piece of metal "clamping" the tabs to the terminal. I think Jukka said he
has seen cells where the screws turned into mush so they must not have been
stainless.

Can electrolyte leak out of the output tabs of the pouch cells and cause
corrosion? Don't the individual pouch cells have to be hermetically sealed?
How can electrolyte leak out without air leaking in?

I am making a big purchase of cells soon and my existing battery box would
require at least some cells be on their sides. It probably would be best to
mount all the cells with the same orientation rather than having some on
their sides and some vertical. Any comments welcome.

Well, quite a few months ago (probably a year ago), I did post some info on this..I'll have to try to dig it up.

I think the answer depends on the type of cells. I only know about Thundersky cells and I got a definitive answer from Thundersky back when I was doing my conversion. They said vertical was preferred, but it was okay to mount them horizontal.

I have maybe 5 or 6 of my cells mounted horizontal; so far, no problems at all, but I don't abuse the cells and utilize a BMS.
