Default Just wondering if

A Mustang 5.0 V8 can be stuffed into a 1990 Miata is there any reason an 11", 250 volt Kostov, which would my ideal conversion, wouldn't fit? I remember someone wrote in a thread a 9" Netgain was a tight fit.

The issue is will it fit between the mounts. The shaft of the motor must be inline with the transmission and with a big V8 the oil pan is down by the mounts and fits fine between the mounts. The fat motors may not. Measure between the mounts to be sure. The 11" Kostov is a pretty fat motor. I'd think it should if you modify the mounting brackets. With stock mounting brackets maybe not. You need to measure and be sure before you buy. If a 9" fits it would be an excellent sized motor for a little car like the Miata. I have a 9" in my Ghia. I can put in a 13 inch if I wanted. I have loads of room width wise. Length wise is my problem area. My 9" just fits length wise. My 11 Kostov with a fan may not fit properly length wise. I may have to cut if I decide to use that motor.

paker,

I have a Warp 9 in a '96 Miata. It is a very tight fit on the diameter. There is only about 1/16 of an inch clearance between the bottom of the motor and the power steering. You may be able to relocate the steering and gain the space you need. I'm not sure about that.

Hmmm.. I'm not so sure I'd want to mess with the steering. If it was just a mount issue I could work with that. Thanks for the picture RKM.

If you don't use a transmission you could move the motor further back and not deal with the steering at all. An 11 inch running higher voltage, geared properly, might be enough to run without a trans in a Miata, maybe.

As we do miata conversions, the issue is with the space under the motor -it's very close to not only the steering rack, but the frame crossmember too. It has to be this low to keep the driveline angularity correct. An 11" would fit between the mounts though. One way around this would be to raise the motor higher in the front, but then you would have to correct the driveshaft angles as the u-joints won't be in the same plane, which would create another set of problems. Realistically, a 9" in a miata moves it pretty good, not really much need for an 11".

My problem is that I need enough power to be able to drive 70-85 MPH for 11 miles on I-4 and 7 miles at 50-60 MPH on a 6 lane highway going to work. From what I've read that would be pretty hard on a Warp 9 motor, plus I want something that could approximate the performance I get from my 2000 Eclipse GT.

I did find a bit of hope for an 11" motor in a Miata from an Australian blog site. The person doing the conversion isn't using a transmission, but I think the frame idea could easily be modified to hold a gearbox.

Flyin Miata, Monster Miata and Boss Frog have aftermarket front cross members that look lower than stock. I'm not sure what they do about the steering though. Have you considered the warp 11HV?

Is there enough room in the tunnel to shorten the driveshaft and push the transmission back further?

Good point. I wish I knew. It does look like the motor can come forward a few inches.
