Default Why do I have pulsing starts?

My Del Sol has a Kelly Controller and Warp 9.

When I'm starting off in second gear going up hill, if I accelerate too quickly I get a pulsing sensation from the motor. It pulses at about 5 cycles per second while its accelerating.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it caused by the Kelly limiting the current? Does it have to do with the motor rotating slowly?

Thanks for the help.

Do you have a large heatsink on the controller? A picture of your setup would help.

I have a Kelly KDH09401 in my Civic and it will go into Thermal Overload after 3 minutes and make my top sustainable speed about 35 MPH in a flat stretch. Once a hill, or an incline comes into play it just dies. I have it on a huge finned heatsink with dual cooling fans from an Intel Xeon server.

Check the program settings on the Kelly to make sure they are what you want, and also check all your cable connections and use an ohmmeter to check the resistance on your pot box to make sure that isn't hinky.

It could be mechanical windup in your drivetrain too. My MR2 has that problem at low speeds in 2nd and 1st gears. Sometimes the high torque winds up the axles and makes the whole thing bounce a bit until I get going. I have to either let off the throttle or stomp on it more to get out of it. If the problem goes away by starting out in a higher gear, then this is probably the issue.

Also test for a noisy/dirty throttle pot.

No, I don't have a heat sink, but the controller doesn't get hot. The pot is fine. it only does this when starting up under a heavy load. It feels like the Kelly is trying to limit the current but it goes into some kind of oscillation.

I think you are on the right track with the idea that I'm winding up my drive system. Maybe that coupled with the Kelly's response to the load.

What does your AMP meter read while this is happening?

If it is the controller, the meter should fluctuate wildly

If it is mechanical (wind-up), the fluctuations will be less.

My guess is loose or broken motor mount. Could the motor be shifting out of place and rubbing on the chasis at high torque loads?

What the current is doing would help, It sounds like current limiting. I drove a EV car that did the same thing, Kind of chattered with a lot of throttle and 2nd gear. It was very obvious on a analog gauge, bumping the max amps of the controller.

Have you looked at the signal (I know it is not easy) on a scope? IF you are getting noise on the pot line - at hard torque - it can feed back and cause what you say.. I might be way off in your case but simple bypass cap might help on potbox..
