Default Allow me to introduce myself...

My name is Joe, and I want to build an electric Jeep.

I'm planning to build either a vintage Willys pickup or a seriously beat up '79 CJ-5 I have lying around. I have every intention of building it out of stuff that's lying around, keeping costs to a minimum.

I really got the "cheapskate" idea after I cobbled up my first SVO/Biodiesel processor and system on my now sold 1991 Ford F-250. You really can make anything from anything with enough ingenuity and spare parts.

Then, I met a guy at Septemberfest '08 in Omaha who built his own electric motorcycle from mostly used and salvaged parts. He can be found at www.firstontop.com. Neat fella.

Wish me luck, and I'll see you around.

Good luck, Joe.

I will tell ya though... just because you have something doesn't necessarily make it a good candidate for conversion.

If it did, I'd have made my 1970 CJ5 electric long ago.

Consider this, the CJ5 is already well known for its tendency to roll. Yours less so, due to the widetrack axles, but still... Now you're talking about putting (presumably) about 1000 lbs of lead up there...

That's why I opted not to do it on my CJ...

Also, 4x4 = less range with an EV... something more to consider.
