Happy New Year!!
Jenny Isaacs founded Pennsylvania non-profit Bucks County Renewables in 2006
to promote electric vehicles as a way of reducing U.S. dependence on fossil
fuels. Inspired by EV conversion coursework innovated in California, she
single-handedly developed, funded and oversaw the first-ever such workshop
on the East Coast. In 2007 a visiting instructor worked with eight
automotive technology teachers, general educators and environmentalists to
successfully convert a 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon to fully electric and to
train a local teacher to lead the workshop
In 2009 the course was offered again, this time with support from the
Pennsylvania DEP's competitive Environmental Grants Program. In addition to
providing the opportunity for 13 more educators and EV enthusiasts to get
hands-on experience with the conversion process, the grant funded the
development of a week-long EV curriculum geared towards high school students
and suitable for use in a physics, engineering, or automotive technology
class or with a group of students interested in forming an EV club. This
curriculum is free and available online at www.buckscountyrenewables.com.
Bucks County Renewables now owns two converted electric vehicles, the
e-Vanagon and a 1991 Dodge Colt. In addition to being used for teaching
purposes, the EV's have been exhibited at educational and environmental
events such as the Pennsylvania Alternative Energy Festival, RiverFest, and
the Sierra Club-sponsored Step it Up! series of climate change rallies. BCR
annually coordinates the EV portion of the educational offerings in the
Transportation Tent at the Pennsylvania Alternative Energy Festival in
Kempton, PA, which takes place every September. In May of 2009 BCR (along
with a committee of local EV enthusiasts and with support from the Eastern
Electric Vehicle Club and the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Association)
helped sponsor an all-EV display in Macungie, PA. Plans are already
underway for the second annual EV-ent to take place on May 1, 2010.
Building upon the success of the two summer workshops, BCR will be offering
a Saturdays-only workshop beginning on March 13, 2010 and leading to display
of the finished vehicle at the EV-ent in May. Please visit
www.buckscountyrenewables.com for more details about the workshop or the
EV-ent.
A former teacher and middle school administrator, BCR founder Jenny Isaacs
is passionate about alternative education as well as alternative fuels. In
the last three years she has successfully helped to found both a homeschool
learning center and a Montessori school, as well as serving on the board of
a local Friends school. She is also a published poet and a free-lance
editor.
Sincerely;
Douglas A. Stansfield
