Yet, according to a Toyota press release, "Toyota will pay Tesla
approximately $100 million to supply the electric powertrain, which includes
the battery, motor, gear box and power electronics for the RAV4 EV."

Toyota has a lot to lose in terms of their reputation for durability and
reliability - and they're already fighting bad press over alleged runaway
incidents in past years. Their approach to the Prius has been rigorously
conservative, even stodgy, and I assumed it was because they were guarding
that reputation. So their choice of bedfellows for the RAV4 project is
puzzling.

I wonder if Tesla will supply something a little more conventional - meaning
fewer, larger cells - for the RAV4.
