Default Which is best?

Is there any consensus as to the best type of car to convert a rear wheel drive with its inline engine or a front wheel drive with its transverse engine.

I am worried that a transverse engine bay might not have sufficient room to fit a 16in motor.

I am thinking something like a Mondeo/Vectra Estate or similar.
