Default [EVDL] Why ordinary resistors shouldn't be used as fuses

Since it's the 4th of July, I thought it might be an appropriate time to
post this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-MoPe0oY_0&feature=plcp

It shows what happens if you put 70 vdc across an ordinary 24 ohm 1/4w
carbon film resistor. It bursts into flames! The guy in the video uses
them to light fireworks. :-)

This sort of thing can happen to a BMS. When a cell fails open, the full
pack voltage appears across the BMS input. If the designer didn't think
of this, it can create a fire just like this.

Default Re: [EVDL] Why ordinary resistors shouldn't be used as fuses

Wow, this is a great idea for someone with a miniature landscape
like a model railway who likes to celebrate Independence or
Newyears day on miniture scale ;-)

I see that he uses 2 resistors in series, plugged into his
"lanch" control board using Ethernet cables and he is using
the resistors to set off the fuse of fireworks, so he can
control it from a distance.
