Re: Hpevs ac50
Hello Brian, good to see you here.
Quick question: can any and all AC50 (and newer) controller parameters be programmed via the serial port using standard clear text interface or is the Curtis programmer a must for that? Or rephrased, can I write my own software to program the controller or query param status via the serial port?

Re: Hpevs ac50
The Curtis controller parameters can be set by the hand held programmer OR the Curtis supplied PC software, via serial port.
It is possible to write your own software to do it too, but you will need some skillz in that area as well as a lot of time.
You can rent a programmer also instead of buying one. Most people get their parameters set and never need to change it.
I need to tweak mine a little this weekend and I will not need to change things much as my car is a commuter type and will not need to adapt to changing conditions like maybe a racecar would.

Hi JR<
We code the AC50 motor characterization parameters in VCL. The is no way to change or write them to controller via the serial port unless you load a complete new software package. If you load new software, all of the parameters we put in the controller will be erased.

Re: Hpevs ac50
Thank you, Brian. Can I use the Curtis programmer to change the parameters without deleting the HPEVS programming?
I'm trying to figure out how to integrate the controller to external components to both monitor conditions (regen, bat volts, amps) and set some parameters on the fly like the amount of regen, max voltage, etc.

Re: Hpevs ac50
The Curtis spyglass does some of it, Plus...
I have been told that a serial bluetooth transmitter can send to an android device. They use a couple of programs, EV Dashboard or similar.

Re: Hpevs ac50
Yes, you can change parameters with a handheld 1311 or the 1314 programming station without affecting the software. As a general rule though, parameters are set it and forget it type of things. There would be no need to change the max voltage parameter and the regen can be varied by use a potentiometer on the Brake Input on the controller. You will need to set some parameters to make this work properly though.
Like Miz said, the Spyglass give you some useful information while driving. Motor RPM, Battery Voltage, Motor Temp & Controller Temp.
I don't know of any apps for an Android device that will communicate with the Curtis controller, never really looked into it though.

Re: Hpevs ac50
There was talk of better instrumentation coming for the Curtis, it would be nice not to have to scroll through all the parameters on the 840 and just have them all displayed at the same time, or at least more of them.

Re: Hpevs ac50
The Engage 7 is a full dash display that uses CAN bus for the signal inputs. The problem is, the display is not configurable, one has to design a template for the screen. This is more for OEM's that have specific needs.
The next generation software for the controller will have an option to use the factory OE gauges. This uses a module that plugs into the CAN bus on the controller and outputs a PWM signal. It has signals for: BDI, pack voltage, motor temperature and battery current.

I just posted the following in my build thread:

Initially I just thought something needed adjusting but now that everything is checked and tightened I still cannot get the motor RPMs above 100 and the motor temp goes to 65 to 70C in less than a minute. The controller stays at 35 to 40C and the outside temp is 72F (22C.) I was drawing about 100 Amps when the motor was going 100 RPM.

I have an AC35 which I purchased in May. Hopefully this is the right place to request some help in diagnosing the problem.I get no error messages and the only light on the controller that is blinking is the yellow light.
