Seriously though - what were they thinking?
Is injecting a virtual storm of bad AC power with spikes,
surges, brown- and black-outs not part of the testing any more?

Even a cheap power supply gets his share of grid interruption testing
where (fractions of) cycles are removed and voltage varied and the
response from the supply checked whether it performs without flaw.

As an engineer I always want to know what happens when the input signal
is within spec and how graceful the performance degrades when it is not.

Apparently a ball was dropped here...

So, the Leaf connected to GE Wattstation were both in the wrong place,
at the wrong time. D'em pesky utility glitches came through the GE
Wattstation and then did a number on the Leaf.

Resolve: ... avoid charging during times when brownouts or momentary
power dips may be likely, such as during electrical storms or high power
usage on the grid.
