Default Newby questions

Hello, I am considering doing a conversion and was wondering why the DC brushless systems are not really used much? Is it cost vs performance? I am an EE by trade and understand the basics. I do know the brushed DC systems are lower cost but would prefer to have Regenerative Braking and the ability to reverse easily. The AC motors could be done as well but I know in smaller motors the DC brushless are very hard to beat for torque vs size and weight.
