<other-notes>I had planed on this long before the ICE reached the end of it's useful life, last fall that time came, and the Fiero was parked until I had the finances to begin.

The plan is for this to be a hybrid electric, all batteries in the back with the electric motor and the Honda genset under the front hood. this will keep the balance near to original and the high current cables short.

I bought a GE 9" series with only 8 hours on it, but it had a spun shaft in the armature. Jim at Hi Torque will be doing the work on the armature.

additional notes: I would prefer 144 for battery range, but may cut back so as to not have to advance brush timing so far and loose torque. I'll know more once Jim at Hi Torque has a chance to look over the armature I sent.

update! this will definitely be 144V once I can afford all of the batteries.
update! there here!

update! My armature is back from Jim Husted and it looks great! see photos.

I finished the motor side of my custom DE plate with the exception of the cut outs for the fan exhaust; the transmission side is still in progress. (it just barely fits on the 9" lathe.)

My hack job adjustable voltage EV charger is now functional, but will have many improvements before it is done.

The DE plate is now complete and the motor and transmission are now assembled and ready to fit in the motor cradle.

Update It's in! the motor is installed and my daughter and I drove it around the yard to day on 24v with no controller; she connected jumpers together to complete the circuit while I drove, and she disconnected when we needed to stop.

It has been a while since I have updated this, I have since test drove the Fiero Electro using my home brew DC motor controller I am building; it is functonal, but still a work in progress. details in my controller thread; http://www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/showthread.php/blackpanther-sts-home-brew-dc-motor-32083.html</other-notes>

    <motor>Hitachi 11 kw, timing advanvced 12.5 degrees for 144 Volt</motor>
    <name>EV Ranger</name>
<other-notes>With years of experiance with forklifts, i have access to all the parts that i need, except for the controller, charger and crosscharger, wiich are on order now. The truck has been stripped of all IC parts, the Hitachi motor and trans are at the shop while we fabricate the motor/clutch/trans adaptor. The Hitachi motor is from a Datsun / Nissan forklift, which i advanced the timing 12.5 degrees for 144 volts.
The battery racks are coming along well, and should be installed in the next week or so, just in time for the motor/trans. As for the ElectroCraft controller, charger, and crosscharger, thats the eazy part for me, having converted many many forklifts over the years...............
 May 9/09.....
The latest changes, The power steering pump is installed and working, using a 12 volt hyd. pump motor, with a custom adapter to bolt the P.S. pump to the motor. I also decided to go clutchless to simplify the drive motor / transmission adaptor. It is also coming along well and should be ready in a week or two, when ElectroCraft is supposed to have the controller ready......
Latest setback, all 4 leaf spring mounts have to be replaced, this is part of the frame, where the shackles mount to the frame. I need to replace all 4 when the leaf springs get installed, to carry all the extra weight.........
Aug 4/09..........
Rear leaf springs and battery boxes are installed. I had to make a custom ventalated battery box for the back seat to fit the remaining batteries that couldn't be fitted under the tilt bed.
All the components are here, the motor\trans adapter plate, the ElectroCraft 800 Amp controller, ElectroCraft Crosscharger 12 volt to 144 volt 15 amp, And ElectroCraft Battery charger 120 AC input 144 volt output 6 hour charge. The Hitachi motor should be done this week and be ready to install the motor\transmission in the next week or so.....
Latest change, i went back to using the clutch and original flywheel. The main reason was that it was eazier to adapt a magnetic pickup on the ring gear for the tachometer, which has a shift light built in. I'll use shift light output for the RPM limiter, just a simple relay at the speed pot input.................Aug 26/09.... The motor and clutch are installed, the controller, potentiometer box, charger, and cross charger are also mounted. I'm in the prossess of making up switches for the transmision shifter and clutch pedal, so the motor can't be opporated without a load. Next step, installing the batteries into the trays. I left them out to make it eazier to push the truck in and out of the garage.... Latest problem... I'm not happy with the 12 volt motor that i have driving the PS pump. It's too loud and winey. I experimented with a power resister on the motor to slow it down. Although it was alittle quiter, i lost pump preasure the more i slowed it down. I'm considering other motors, or going to direct drive on the main drive motor { thus i will loose PS when the truck and main motor are stopped }. </other-notes>
