Hi all,
I was hoping to reach out to Jozzer as his name has popped up on forums about someone who's successfully converted motorbikes to electric and got them registered with DVLA. (as I'm new here it won't let me for some reason so opening this up to everyone)
I'm planning on converting my own motorbike this year and have reached out to DVLA to see what the process is like. As far as I can see I will need a reciept of purchase from the manufacturer (in my case QS motor) as well as the serial number, using which I can then fill in and send off section 1 of my V5C to declare a change of engine. The lady from the DVLA said I will not have to declare change of fuel type and also said I don't have to fill in tax class, they would let me know what tax class it then falls into. Other than that it seams I will have to have my local garage inspect the bike post conversion and send off a headed letter confirming the bike has been inspected. As I won't be able to start this process without buying the motor to get the serial number and reciept from manufacturer I wanted to reach out to you to ask if there are any other crucial documents or standard I'll have to adhere to. In particular, I've been wondering if there is anything I have to register with the battery, as I was planning to build my own. Building my own battery also means I can fabricate the battery case to mount using the bike original engine mounts so I won't need to make any frame modifications. I was also planning to weigh the motor and try make the battery a similar weight and shape to not change the weight distribution too much. My planned specs will be as follows:
Original Bike
Lexmoto ZSB 125cc
Electric parts:
74V 23S 4P 60AH LiFePo4 battery (using liitokala lifepo4 33140 cells)
5kW 17 inch V2 QS hub motor (273)
Sabvoton SVMC72150 sine wave controller (I've checked the hall sensor phase angle is 120° for both motor and controller)
I've read that 5kW is equivalent to 125cc so I'm hoping this will keep the DVLA happy and not require me to get a full licence yet.
If anyone could give any advise on any pitfalls regarding the DVLA or insurance I'd be incredibly thankful.
