An electric DeLorean!

7495 Views 30 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Ashyukun
I've finally, officially, started my DeLorean EV conversion project.

First video is uploaded to YouTube, which discusses why I'm doing the conversion and how I selected the donor vehicle:

I just recently purchased the donor (Chevy Bolt) from Copart, and it's in transit now. On July 5th I will take the first steps to remove the engine, transmission, and fuel components from the DeLorean in prep for swapping in the EV components... once I get the design finalized and battery box built and everything!

The plan is to release videos every month or so.

I'm happy to answer any questions if you've got any! :)

Nicely done & subscribed. Looking forward to seeing your cooling plate scheme in detail

The welding table you're lamenting caught my eye...where'd you get it and who makes it?
Thanks!

Here's the welding table:

It's not terrible, but the top is super thin sheet metal that heats up while welding and warps, taking your project with it. Otherwise it's nicely portable and sufficient for a lot of hobbyist work. A nice upgrade for me would be one of the "CertiFlat" weld tables from here: WeldTables.com Home of CertiFlat DIY Welding Table Kits Of course, instead of $250 it's more like $350 for the top, then $200 for legs, and it won't fold down so it would be a permanent fixture.

The foldaway part caught my eye.

I really liked the: "if I was to do this again" learnings you shared, by the way. Few people do that.

Here's my latest update for the electric DeLorean conversion!!

Getting first close to having first drive... Honestly, just waiting for the temps to warm up long enough to melt the snow around here. Unfortunately, it may end up being a 3 month wait, but that'll give me time to button everything up.

Can't drive it when it's this cold?

What is this "can't" you speak of?

The ground hasn't turned into vapor, roll out!
His battery boxes are not fully sealed yet that I can tell.

So no rain, no snow - she's a fair weather garage queen for now cuz it's not done yet.

It's also too nice of a car to use as a winter beater...
There's also about a foot of snow on the gravel leading up into that side of the shop - so physically it can't get out of there for the time being. We're still working on getting a tractor and/or an F150 Lightning with a plow to be able to move the snow more reliably, but we should have a better solution for next winter.

IT DRIVES!!!

Bill - Don't bother removing ads. Youtube is a jerk now, and puts ads on unmonetized videos anyways. So your choice isn't whether to have ads or not, but only whether you get paid for them or not.

How'd you get monetized anyways? You only have 1300 subs and not that many views. Youtube removed me from the ad program after being on it for 10 years, because, well, I haven't posted anything in like, 9 years and, despite having 5k subs, my views were, well, almost as low as yours. Looks to me like you're way below the limit.

Also, if one of your videos gets picked up and goes viral, you'll be kicking yourself in the pants for not being monetized. Source: Know several people who said "Why bother?" and then oops, millions of views, and me posting the joker burning billions of dollars in cash saying "It's not the money, it's about sending a message!" :p
The minimum requirements now are >1000 subscribers and >4,000 watch hours per year, which I've been above for about 6 months to a year. I have a couple of videos that have done consistently well over the years (which I will leave monetized), but none of my Project Lightning videos have ever had more than a few thousand views.

I might play around with leaving the monetization tab enabled - but then disabling all the optional ads. I'm not 100% certain how to minimize the advertisements - but that is the goal, not sending a message to YouTube (who does not care about me, haha).
The cooling plate build should do fairly well, imo. as would the Delorean's 0-88 acceleration time test (the lede story for the video) vs Marty McFly's time (time the movie). Noting the 0-60 time on the way, of course.

The battery boxes will do well once the Bolt volumes get up there to populate salvage yards (they are still quite rare) and GM are ramping production now.

Get some presence out there with Fully Charged in Vancouver this year (offer them a test drive/evaluation while they are in San Diego or during their next Vancouver visit as they set up for their show) and then bringing the car to their confab), maybe even a Chevy thing (reach out the Chevy's PR team).

What you have is very marketable. Including your TiG skills.

Definitely going to be going back and watching through all of the videos- my DMC (16655) is currently split apart in my garage (frame and body- I'm jealous of your lift...) because the frame rusted through at the back of the front crumple tube and I need to repair that and several other spots. Since I've got it so torn apart am going to do everything that I've wanted to over the decade or so I've owned it including putting in a better power plant and I'm leaning heavily toward going electric with it.
