energy numbers are given in Btu's or raw energy ( barrels of oil ) . wind and solar cells put out high grade electric power , a 3 to 1 energy advantage or 3 watts of oil to make 1 watt electric , with diesel . Gas would be 4 to 1 . Then with short trips making up much driving , the cold start up makes the efficiency get even worse , Maybe as low as 6 to1 and 8 to 1 .
With people (me) driving older cars the efficiency can get really bad and/or missing a air filter needing replacement or tuneup in general . We still haven't transported and refined the oil yet . transport not that bad , but it adds up . Cracking crude is a huge energy consumer .
