Cheap 19kW discharge resistor

1863 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Doctorbass
I've been testing battery power and energy for years now and there iwas one idea that i had in my mind to test multi kilowatt of power... Today i decided to go ahead with that idea !!!

TIME FOR KILOWATT POWER TEST !!!

What's nice with that cheap idea is that it also include the built-in cooling fan !! resistor is aprox 10ohms in DC,

each can do 120V dc no prob so you can combine more in serie to get the desired test voltage and put couple in parallel to increase amp... i paid about 8$ CAD each so that's about 80$ for a 19kW air cooled load resistor capable of 130A discharge!

Why use hair dryers?
Why not just use electric fan heaters - more power and easier to group together

Most fan heater use induction motor that doesn't work on DC like Hair Dryer does!... and with hair dryer no ned for modification they are ready to work and dont make bad smell of heated element with dust burning!

I'm using convection heaters. No fans: some fans won't run on DC.
10 heaters 2kW each: US$150. Got two now for my charger tests.
Convection heater are hood idea too but these take alot of place! 10 hair dryer is very compact for a small garage like i have!
