I am just getting started on research for a Chevy S10 conversion. I am relying on old hot rod skills to get me pointed in the right direction. I am happy to see all of this activity.

IMO
Old Hot Rod skills won't help much when it comes to EV's.

Maybe a little bit when fabbing & mounting the components
...but, not much for the actual "EV stuff"

I'd start off by doing lots & lots of research (it's free)

Watch how others have done their conversions
...take note of what seems to work
...& also, what looks kinda "janky"

Try-n-copy what works (in your own way of course)
...& don't do what didn't

Take a look at @OR-Carl's S10 build thread.

Hot rod skills and tools are an excellent start, definitely apply, but lot to learn from there, particularly in the planning stage.
