I’m planning to build a custom crew cab flat fender power wagon and am trying to figure out if I should stick with a Cummins diesel drivetrain and put off the inevitable swap for a decade or more (likely more efficient batteries) or if I should get it done now. If I go diesel, I will have to purchase a donor truck or buy the engine separately.
my goals are to have a truck that can drive 250-300 miles at 60mph, decent performance (this thing is going to be very heavy). I also want to be able to tow up to 10,000lbs. I understand my range will be reduced dramatically, but perhaps not as bad as modern electrics because this thing already has a terrible drag coefficient.
I’d like to have 4 wheel drive, like one motor per axle unless others recommend something different.
my thoughts are a large tesla drive unit for the rear axle and a small unit for the front, 100-150kW of battery, and I definitely want to have regenerative braking.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Also any insight on total cost and the best places to source components.
Thanks!
Andreas
