Hi all!
I am planning on assembling a 50kwh pack out of multiple Li Ion cells. I am planning charging with level 2 at 6.6kw and I was wondering if I need a battery cooling system when charging.
Active cooling: No
Passive cooling: Probably not
Depends on the the climate you are in and the pack temperature when you start charging.
Even temperature distribution is always a good thing.
I live in Ottawa, Canada. In the summer, days are on average 25°C and maximum in the low 30s. By passive cooling, you mean some air around the cells and a little fan to circulate the air?
Yes, by active cooling I mean with an airconditioning and passive cooling just using ambient temperature.
I wrote a blogpost about battery temperatures
Is there such thing as an ideal battery temperature? Building on university research data we discuss battery temperature and discharge, charge and conclude ideal temperature is a tradeoff between maximizing capacity and preventing degradation.

Think you should be fine in terms of hot day temperature values, perhaps cold weather is something to think about. And as said temperature distribution perhaps.
