in wheel motors have high unsprung weight, Its also not good for a motor to be subject to all the vibrations from the road and suspension moving up and down.

you can take a front wheel drive car and add an IRS rear suspension out back and attach the motor to where the axle would connect .
that would reduce unsprung weight but not necessarily total weight .
i have been thinking about probably the same thing you are thinking . honda civic with hub motors out back for fun . lol
sombody builds a kit that is astronomical in price for a honda civic .
