I am in the process of planning a Bellytank build. For those who don't know what a bellytank is, it is a car typically built for running speed trials on the Bonneville Salt Flats. They are a very simple vehicle that utilizes a drop tank from a World War 2 fighter as the body shell. I want to use this Bellytank to bop around car shows and short cruses on the street, so it's going to run head and tail lights. I would like to build my Bellytank around an electric driveline and I am wondering if it possible to do it with electric golf cart components.

The total weight of the vehicle will be around 1000 pounds with me in it. Rear end gear ratio will be 3.78:1 with 30" - 31" tires. With that gear ratio and that tire size, I figure I need to turn 1361 rpm to 2700 rpm to get into the 30 - 60 mph range for speed. Is this possible with an electric golf cart motor and a 48 - 72 volt system? Can I do it without adapting a transmission into the driveline? I would like to couple the electric motor directly to the rear end. The tank I have is relatively short and I am 6'-2", so I'm trying to keep the driveline as compact as possible.

I've built several hot rods from the ground up, so the mechanical portion of this project is well in hand. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Indy, after 120 years the "jamais contente" may come back!
I am sure Mr. Camille Jenatzy would be happy to see You brake some of his old records.
Looking forward to your project's progress.
Markus
Well, I'm only looking to run to the coffee shop on Sunday morning or to putt around at car shows, no record setting passes for me. Thanks for the encouragement though.

Hi
A 9 inch forklift motor will do that perfectly - direct drive to your diff
However you will need more volts - I would suggest at least 150 volts
Sounds like a wonderful project
Where do you get the tanks from??

My car is a good bit larger but the same overall concept

I got one tank from a guy in my Model T club. The other came from a friend who races on the salt flats. He has a collection of drop tanks he collected while building his land speed car. This particular tank is a little on the small side, so he let it go to me.
