Cool forum. Just picked up 1991 Geo Metro already converted to electric. Needs batteries. Wondering what batteries to use. It had 10 12volt 100ah led acid batteries. Any suggestions? 120 volt system.

Listed from cheapest to most expensive batteries from salvaged production cars:
Fiat 500e
Nissan LEAF
Chevy Volt/Bolt
Tesla
This will certainly depend on location. The Fiat 500e is extremely uncommon in Canada, so salvaged batteries from them are probably not readily available or cheap.

Note that the Volt and Bolt batteries, while technically related (both are LG Chem pouch cell stacks) are distinct designs, very different in characteristics, and completely different in salvage availability and cost... they should be separate items in the list. Similarly, there are several Leaf battery variants; you need to know which one you're buying to know what you're getting and even whether the modules will fit in your project.

If the controller can go up in voltage you will get more power and possibly more range. Just check your equipment for max voltage. Nissan Leaf packs are easy. Some hybrid packs are around 144vdc and that would make things easy if your controller can except that voltage. So many variables. Good luck.

A Zilla controller can be adjusted to accept high voltage and put out a voltage acceptable to your motor.
Any controller accepts battery voltage up to the controller's limit and puts out to the motor only the voltage required to push the requested current. It is good if the controller can be programmed with a motor voltage limit, if the battery's fully charged voltage and motor's limit don't match.

I was only commenting on the reality of hybrid batteries, which are typically not the 144 V suggested. The original Honda Insight IMA hybrid battery voltage was that low (120 cells in series of 1.2 VNOM NiMH cells), but I doubt anything recent is... and the battery of a non-plug-in hybrid is too small (in energy capacity) to be useful in a battery-electric vehicle.

What useful (several kWh) hybrid battery runs at only 144 V (approximately)?
