When I got back from our 4 month tour I went around charging and
checking batteries . Audrey's Rav 4 ,probably the most used EV has a 8
inch AD motor. When I started it up and spun the motor It did a funny
oscillation kind of like I was pumping the peddle . I looked at the
motor and saw more sparks than I though normal coming from the
brushes. I popped the guard and moved the spring over to see that the
brush would move , it didn't . So I took off the bell and found that
most of the brushes where locked in their holders . I had to push very
hard to get them out . Once out with a little sanding they slid fine
in the holders , and the car works fine now . In Florida the humidity
is very high and I think it must react with the brush dust , First
time this happened to me I didn't know it and ruined a nice 9" motor.
Is there a spray that could be sprayed on the brushes to loosen them
up without taking everything apart?

Hello Steve,

Go to a motor shop and see what type of motor cleaning compound they have.
I am using Chemtronics products that I got from my motor shop. There is a
motor spray wash and then you apply a motor dielectric spray and finally a
dielectric oil which may be needed if the washing removes the oil from the
bearings.

You can actually spray the motor while its turning. If you have the motor
out for maintenance, the motor shop immerses in a tank of this cleaning
solution while running the motor before doing any other work to the motor.

You can also get motor cleaning spray compounds from NAPA which is use to
clean the engine starters.

If there was sparking, hopefully no damage occurred to the armature. It might
need cleaning, and the mica cut.

Hi, welcome back to the "Sunshine State" to both of you, I might suspect
the vibration of the motor commutator segments moving the brushes slightly
helps keep the brush guides cleared out as the motor is used, but not when
parked for several months. A great source of phosphor-bronze brushes is the
Gun shop the barrel cleaning brushes come in sizes for every caliber in
fractional inches or MM dimension and with handles and extensions of inches
to feet that all screw together nicely, I even used to use them to clean
"Phone Jacks " in the Audio studio equipment. Get the right size and "Scrub"
that brush channel in the guide to a shine in a few strokes.
