[EVDL] Corrosion on lead-acid battery terminals

1156 Views 3 Replies 1 Participant Last post by  EVDL List
Probably I'm just slow, but I made and interesting discovery yesterday while
working on the battery terminal corrosion on the Datsun KingCab. I have
Trojan T-105's, and wondered why some positive terminals had a lot more
corrosion than others. Then I noticed that the caps on the cells have vent
holes only on one side, and I had an eppifany - if the vent holes next to
each terminal were turned toward the terminal, they would spray acid mist
directly onto the connection! Has anyone else noticed this???

Hello Joe,

I use to have these type of Trojans battery that did the same thing after 8
years of usage. So when I replace the batteries, I coated new battery
clamps and the battery post except for the battery clamp contact area with
that black and red tool handle rubber dip stuff. The directions on this
compound says it acid proof. Did not coat the battery clamp bolts, but coat
the space between the battery clamps bolt holes.

I also install the red and black anti-corrosion felt rings below the battery
clamp and the post pad. Coat all the expose lead terminal down to the
battery top.

I did this type of anti-corrosion installation on Sept 4, 2009 and do not
have and corrosion at all. While the charger is on, I do not read any
conductance from any of the battery post to the battery tops which I did
with the old batteries.

Roland

What I did, Roland, this time, beside turning the vent holes away from the
terminals - coated the terminals and inside of the clamps with KoprKote, put
the anit-corrosion washers on the terminals, then coat over top the clamps,
terminals and bolts with Scotchkote, a liquid rubber coating. We'll see how
that goes.

In the marine industry, we used the paint on electrical tape. You can ev=
en use =

multiple layers if you think it has the potential for impact or extreme =

environmental hazard. Works great! And, a quick light slice with an exacto =
knife =

and it peels off easier than anything else I have ever used.
