Here's the wikipedia page on the Chevy S10 EV OEM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_S-10_EV

Why on earth did they stick in an FWD transmission ?
very interesting ...

Because they just stuck the EV1 drivetrain in there.

I've never had any experience with the S10 electric, but I got to drive a
ford ranger electric for a while, and if it's similar quality to that I
think it would definitely be worth fixing up. OEM electric does have alot
of benefits compared to conversions (and drawbacks, like the silly 8 volt
batteries in the rangers....)

IIRC, they simply used the complete drive system they'd designed for the EV1
(Impact), fitting it into the S10 chassis instead.

Curiously, although they never sold any of the EV1s, they sold a few of the
S10s, maybe because they were marketing to fleet buyers and some fleet
buyers wouldn't lease (my speculation). This is why a few are still
rolling, rather than sitting in piles in the AZ desert like the crushed
EV1s.

Ugh. Looks like it's one of the ones that GM permanently disbled, if the
inverter is missing. Probably just a glider for putting a different
conversion in at this point, unless you happen to have some good connections
to get an inverter from GM....... and there is the comment that it appears
to have a different drivetrain than OEM... so maybe someone already tried
that?

BYU used a consultant that got their GM inverter going again. He has done
several cars. I think he keeps the power section but replaces the logic part.

Hi Rush,

The US Electricar group is indeed interesting,
in fact the first installment of that group was
started by Bruce, the OP who rejoined this week.

Now to be exact, the US Electricar is *one* of
the factory EV S10 and it is *not* the '97 S10
EV, because that one (including its proprietary
FWD) is a GM development, not US Electricar.
You can recognise the US Electricar from several
facts, one is that they only used 1994 longbed S10
and use the original RWD (but upgraded the driveshaft
to a racing carbon-fiber one) and as a result the
battery box has a hump in the middle as Chris already
indicated.
Also the name US Electricar will be on both sides
of the vehicle.
As soon as you open the hood you will see a "Dolphin"
controller, which is believed to be the predecessor
of the EV1 and '97 S10 EV controllers.

The third well-known S10 EV of those times was the
Solectria. You can read the reports about all these
on: http://avt.inel.gov/fsev.shtml

This may be one that a university cannibalized to get an EV-1 running
again. Looks like someone tried to then use it as a glider, but gave
up.
