*** Be careful to secure permissions before using EV Charging found
on Google.

Actually this is not new, I have found EV charging sites on Google for
some time now, but I did not promote it because like many EV charging
sites, Google's is also problematic. Google recently sent a newswire
item that was picked up everywhere, but like many so-called
journalists in the media, they have not spent the time to actually use
it and see if it is a valid EV-driver resource.

I have been spending time on this for the last few weeks, but when
PlugShare seemed a better fit, I postponed my work on my Google post.
Since the EV community will have to wait for PlugShare to work for
all EV'rs, and with Google's announcement, I have queued to continue
working on my planned Google EV Charging post of my experiences. I
will send it later, but I wanted to post this warning-message now.

*** Do not trust what Google shows as EV charger to be a 'public' EV
charging location you can come up to and plug-in as you please
(willy-nilly)

-You could be using private EV charging and get into cost$ly trouble
(towed-away+finger-printed+fined+ ...)

-It could be old EVSE that has been unplugged (incompatible/no-power)

-It could be just plain non-existent (a Google-slam-listing, leaving
you stranded).

{Been-there, done-that} ... more on this later ...

It appears that the database they use (DOE GeoEVSE) is really out of date. They
list two charging locations within 10 miles of my house - one has been removed
(about two years ago), and the other is a non-functional SPI (non-functional for
a number of years).

There are two functioning public stations near me they don't list... One is a
J1772 station, the other is a row of three 5-20 plugs in a public garage with
'reserved for electric vehicles' signs. (5-20 is slow, but at least they're
trying!)

There is a semi-functional Avcon station nearby as well - It will probably still
work, but you have to get the building maintenance people to turn on the
breaker.

The cool thing about google maps is that you can click on "report a problem"
and they will fix it, and let you know when it is fixed. Done it a few
times with roads near our cabin.
Was talking about this very charge station mapping feature today as a few of
us drove past Dearborn and Detroit to a fab shop just north of there. It led
into a great chat about ev's.
