This short editorial is my opinion I will blame no other for it. I believe
the content will suggest a positive path of action which may be self serving
and personal to this list membership and a larger percentage of the World
than "nay-sayers" would prefer to believe. These comments are one mans
efforts to be effective about about all the negative publicity the EVs keep
getting from the media. Some days it seems if a Positive press release is
distributed the same few "Friendly" media outlets give it coverage, and the
other 20,000 publish something negative and if they post the positive piece
at all it is hidden away beyond the Obituaries section. The behavior shows
they are very very frightened. Perhaps out of Ignorance or fear of change.
Perhaps if we all keep a vigil for these half-truths, and erroneous
statements or confused factoids, then immediately contact the authors,
editors, and publishers with plainly written corrections including our
expert status and combining it with an offer to be locally interviewed.
Reminding them of our established readership status for their publication.
Always speaking positively and never negatively of the author/editor and
their confused information. And just so you never lose hope, remember all
great publicists always agree, "The only bad publicity is no publicity" so
even if whey get it wrong. at least we know only 10% will be remembered in
10 days if that much, and usually only the subject, so the reader will be
more open to reading our press on the same topics, than if no mention of
Electric Vehicles was ever made at all. Remember the scene in "Who Killed
the Electric Car" where the two young ladies said, "Electric Car? Do they
make electric cars? Where can I see one? Are they for sale?" but alas the
EV-1was gone. The Media could hurt our cause much more if they merely
ignored us. But Controversy sells papers; and all media seek readers.

PS, Doug Stansfield, Great work on those PSA's on EVs now distribution and
air play is next? Should we contact local visual media, like TV stations,
and the local-origination department at the Cable TV Distributor and tell
them we want to see them on the TV and do we need to know to whom they can
contact to request them. Dennis

I disagree. I'd rather they'd ignore us than bash us. Ignorance is far
easier to replace than is oft-repeated misinformation.

RIght now, EVs have a relatively positive image. But mass media, especially
the big cable networks, have a powerful influence on opinion in our nation -
just look at how they affect elections. (NOTE: I am NOT suggesting that we
should get into a discussion of politics here, just using that as an
illustration of their power.) With enough volume, the media mavens are
fully capable of destroying much of the public's interest in and enthusiasm
for EVs.

This whole thread makes me think about a couple things.

1. We need a national leader with the stones to promote a national energy
plan, like the Pickens Plan, which has EV's as a key component.
2. EV's need to stand on their own merit, not just tax incentives. A
popular radio show host made a good point yesterday about the fact that
iphones and other popular devices don't need tax incentives to move them=
out
the door, so why should EV's. I appreciate that there's more to it than
that, and market conditions need to be right, but it's still something to
think about.
3. EV hobbyists need to stay positive, and not be so sensitive to the
ignorance of the masses. People just don't know. EV's will happen. It=
's
only a matter of time.
4. EV hobbyists and purists need to lighten up. As a 4x4 hobbyist and
"purist", it used to drive me nuts to see jacked up "state street" trucks
parading around with big tires, knowing full well that they never went
off-road. I changed my tune when I realized that they were helping the
offroad aftermarket, which ultimately helped make more products available
for people like me. Folks that are interested in and drive the Prius, V=
olt,
Leaf and whatever else comes along are helping spread knowledge.

I just got a wild hair and went to the Leaf website (one of the gmail links
next to this email).

At the site, under advocacy, they have the following letter, which they'd
like you to send to your elected representatives.

http://www.nissanusa.com/leaf-electric-car/index?dcp=3Dppn.51170085.&dcc=3D=
0.227392366#/leaf-electric-car/advocacy/index
sample letter:

Dear *State Political Representative*:

Please help lead *Name of State*=92s electric vehicle adoption.

As your constituent, I urge you to aggressively promote the statewide
adoption of zero-emission electric vehicles as a visionary investment.

Specifically, I ask you to:

Vigorously support the construction of accessible and reliable electric
vehicle (EV) charging stations within your district and statewide.

Enable people to quickly install EV charging stations at home by
facilitating the permit process and by encouraging the development of
consistent inspection standards.

Zero-emission electric vehicles are critical to achieving economic and
energy-independence goals. EV production strengthens our state's economy
while improving air quality by lowering the number of gas-powered cars and
trucks on the road.

But to make zero-emission-vehicle adoption a widespread reality, we need a
network of conveniently located charging stations. And convenience begins at
home.

Unfortunately, the process for obtaining the necessary home-installation
permit can be lengthy. Your leadership is urgently needed to help avoid
delays that discourage EV adoption, including ensuring that local inspectors
are available and trained in order to meet the growing EV demand.

Thank you for considering my request. Your support for electric cars puts
you at the forefront of leaders dedicated to achieving energy independence,
while creating a better quality of life.

Sincerely,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Best regards,
Brett
