Duh,
Most likely they set a record for an Electric Vehicle
which happens to have a Hydrogen-based charging system onboard.

It would be really interesting if they provide any detail or even
an architecture of the car, so we can see where the motive power
came from....

How fast would Killacycle go on the salt flats?
My bet is that even White Zombie would beat the Fusion H999
in the class "production-based with electrical drivetrain".

Three years ago the president of the Ford Motor Company had a
large double-page ad in major magazines where he committed
that Ford would not only deliver Hybrid car models, but also
that in a year they would be the number 1 Hybrid vehicle
maker. Soon thereafter the bean counters found out that the
Hybrid is complicated and you could get just as many green
points by declaring your existing fleet "Flex-Fuel".
Not that it would give any benefit of better fuel economy or
less CO2 to the customers and environment, but in the books
it looked just as good.
I wonder how long they are going to tell the lie that with
Hydrogen cars they deliver "vehicles with zero impact on the
environment"....

Anyway - Hydrogen has already received waaaay more attention
than it deserves, so I will stop here.

I have run my gasser on the Salt Flats (great fun!) and plan to run my conversion on the Salt Flats when it is done. A few comments:

I would love to see the Zombie or Killacycle run on the Salt Flats!

I live 2 hours away, if anyone is going to run please email. I would love to spectate or volunteer to crew.

It is a different problem to run land speed racing than drag racing. With drag racing, you do your 1/4 mile and you're done. With land speed, you are just getting warmed up at 1/4 mile. You accelerate for 1 to 4 miles, and then have to hold the speed for a mile. The salt is more slippery than pavement, so you can't get up to speed as fast. Short story: It takes alot more energy to do land speed racing than drag racing. I estimate it would take 3 to 10 times the energy of a drag race run. An advantage electrics have is they don't lose power with altitude, but have less aero drag due to thinner air (Salt Flats are about 4200 feet 1280 meters above sea level). Short story: Gas cars go slower on the Salt Flats, but electric will go faster!

Cautions: I would be nervous about pushing a 70's economy sedan to 150 mph. Many production cars go unstable at high speed.

I'm sure the Ford is more aerodynamic than the Zombie. Bad aero doesn't hurt drag racing (lighter weight helps more than aero hurts), but land speed racing is all about aerodynamics.
