[EVDL] Let me teach you.......NOTHING

I have just seen the worst presentation I have ever seen on EV's. It was sponsored
by Mother Earth News Magazine. Back in the 70's this magazine would teach you
how to make anything out of nothing. They had plans for an EV which I still have
some place. Even a government form to make your own still so you could make your
own alcohol for fuel.

This presentation of "Build Your Own Electric Car" is on you tube and is in 6 parts
here is the address for part 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUapvvCcOUs&feature=channel

This guy has to be heard to be believed. you can tell by the audience he has the grasp
of senior citizens and other people that know nothing about EV's. Please watch one
video and leave a comment on what you think.

This is the type of one day wonder making money off of people with a Saturday
hotel seminar.

I grew up reading the cartoon on the back page of my parent's
subscription to Mother Earth. As an adult, I picked one up and flipped
immediately to the back page and noted with dismay it was gone...

Looking at some of the back issues, I no longer find them nearly as
funny, but it was a good 'hook' to get me to read the rest of the
magazine...

For my part, I enjoyed the whole thing -- I've seen Ben's projects over at EcoModder.com, but it was good to see the whole project of his Metro EV conversion.

Well, he is inspirational, and though I thought a little long winded on some
parts, pretty easy to listen to. The down side is that he oversimplified
the scope to such an extent that people without any background in EVs might
think that EVs are going to be full of batteries and limited to 50 miles,
have to charge all night long, etc. Yes, he did briefly alude to Li-ion and
AC, and so on. Anyway, I am amazed that he did the conversion + buying the
car so incredibly cheap. He must have the record!

My,my: Neil and Robert, I must agree with you this time, (Sorry Phil.) Ben
Nilson did have the appearance of not knowing the order he was going to
discuss the material, but, look at the audience, they seem enthralled, I
would estimate median age at 70, so none of them are likely to build a
conversion, and the visual materials were good, some of the editing would
have looked better if done on an Apple. We are watching a video camera
recording of a live slide presentation, as a 20 year experienced adult
educator I know how tough that can be to accomplish. He held the attention
very well, everything he said was positive about EV including the fact that
DIY can be less expensive. (A $50 motor would be a dream for many)
I also read every copy of "Mother Earth" and used much of what I
learned. Helped a friend building a straw bale house in Eugene, OR. back in
1998. It is true Mother Earth folded, and the Resurrected current version
of Mother Earth is a shadow if its former self, but they have a Giant's
shadow handing above them and a different World Market that includes a lot
fewer of "Jack of all Trades and Master of Several.".types who would build
their own homestead.
I would say the Viet-Nam Vets, and the "Flower Children" were very
Independent thinkers and a surprising number built their own homes
especially of Unique construction materials and designs. like "Bucky Domes,
Cob, Hay-Bale, Ramed Earth, and Newspaper-Adobe .

Initial demand (computed by extrapolating the reservations for GM Volt and
Nissan Leaf,) shall exceed 200,000 vehicles in 2010 and 2011. However only
50,000 vehicles will be marketed, so a LARGE demand for Nice Newer
Conversions is predicted!

Hi Phil,

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you. I watched all 7 of the
videos and considering the audience and all else considered, I thought
the pitch was just about right. Ben threw in a few bits of jargon
which could have been explained (particularly regenerative braking)
but he was clearly on a tight time scale.

The only technical issue I had with the content was the eventual use
of what appeared to be a solid coupler which, if you recall, has been
implicated in other drive train failures due to stripped splines being
caused by a lack of transmission shock absorption - normally performed
by the springs in the clutch driven plate or some rubber somewhere in
the drive train. I accept this is a moot point - it'll be interesting
to see how Ben gets on with his coupler as time progresses.

I was also pleased to see that despite 2 fairly mean YouTube comments
posted by you that Ben replied politely and factually - something that
all of us can aspire to.
