Sorry but battery research goes back farther than the
1900's. There is even suggestion that ancient Egypt
had batteries of a sort stored in the pyramids. I have
not seen any studies as to why they had them. But clay
jars with electrodes and electrolyte in them have been
found and theorized to be batteries.

Uh, the quote was about when NIST (then known as the NBS) began battery
research. The sentence preceeding the quoted statement reads "NBS was
asked to perform work for various agencies of the military." This is
then followed by "Battery research began in 1917..."

The best guess I've seen is that they were used for electroplating (and
counterfeiting).

Archeologists had found "ancient" coins and jewelry that they thought
were modern fakes because they were base metal (lead or copper) with
precious metal (gold or silver) plating. But after these ancient cells
were discovered, it has been surmised that they were used for
counterfeiting. No wonder their existence was kept secret!
