Hello All,

I have a few questions regarding Nim battery packs

What companies commercially produce nimh battery packs ?

How feasible is it to have a assembled battery pack (like the ones
used on white lightning ev racecar) , is such a battery pack any good
for a 120 mile range @ 65 mph ?

there are several chinese companies that produce nimh battery packs ,
i am thinking getting a pack of 1000 c or d type cells

Thank you all
Gulabrao

A quick search of the OEMs that used them in CA 97-02
(Who Killed the Electric Vehicle?) will verify "yes,
it is". Examples include the Toyota RAV4EV, and the
Honda EV+

Cool! I'm gathering you have a good-sized wallet!

Converting a gen. 5 Honda Civic? For $20 DVD you can purchase footage of my '92 sedan, as well as a del Sol and hatch too!

Re: [EVDL] NiMH Battery Packs

< What companies commercially produce nimh battery packs ?

No-one can legally make a NiMH cell larger than 20aH, so you'd have to
find a Chinese company that ignores trade laws.

That would be a 30kWh pack live the RAV4 EV, but again, no-one can
legally make large capacity cells, and paralleling NiMH takes fancy
management on the individual cell level.

You'd need the control software to parallel enough for that size of
pack, which might cost more than the batteries themselves, or, if you
found a company that made the large capacity, you'd want them all
tested by a third party before they left the factory. In either case,
it's quite an investment!

Search the archives, this is an old topic.

Large scale NiMH cells are a great technology, and give great performance!

However, there are technical reasons why many smaller cells can never
equal one big cell. There are very difficult charge-balancing issues,
not the least of which is that 2x of the same NiMH cells connected in
parallel to try to make one cell of twice the capacity simply won't
work. Technical reasons.

Also these cheaper "D" cells have been tested and they usually don't
perform at high currents, the capacity may be there (or in the case of
some bulk vendor-scammers, maybe it won't be there!) but if it can't
discharge quickly its usefulness in an EV is limited. The cheap cells
may also be failure-prone.

There have been efforts to take a bunch of the Prius' NiMH packs and get
actual range out of them. A Prius could only go a few miles on its
pack, they took the packs that normally went to like 10x Priuses and put
them in one vehicle. You can look up their results in the archives, it
was full of charge management issues and the results were not so dramatic.

Range depends on vehicle as much as battery. A poor choice of vehicle
with a high weight and drag won't get half the range as the more
efficient designs.

When does the patent run out and a company can legally make large nimh
batteries again? andrew payne
