[EVDL] Nissan Leaf test drives going on in Western States

1014 Views 8 Replies 1 Participant Last post by  EVDL List
Nissan has their new electric car coming out and they have this event called
the Drive Electric Tour. Has anybody gone to one of these? There are a total
of 23 events where consumers can test drive the Leaf and learn a lot about
it.
You first sign in and get a yellow wrist band and then when your group is up
you can start the tour thru a few enclosed structure where a tour guide
shows you some of the technology of the car.

After these exhibits you can go on a test drive, and after that there is at
least 1 car opened up so that you can mess with the controls and computer
all you want (and look under the hood all you want as well!).

The car is a lot of fun to drive! Tons of torque at low speeds. I didn't
have a chance to go on the highway with it.

What many people don't know is that you also can have the chance to win a
Leaf. You make a 30 second movie on why you deserve to get the leaf and then
Nissan posts this on their website. The person who recorded their video has
to get others to vote on their video, and the person with the most number of
votes wins an electric car!

Here is the link to the events thru December, I think you have to register
and log in to see all the events, which go thru the end of March.

Also, plz could you look at my video and vote if you want to? I really want
a go at winning this

Cheers!

Ok, maybe someone on this list can wn a Leaf. I don't want to make a video,
but I think a winner would be:
show quick scenes of homebuilding and ev with corny things going wrong, with
a voice over. Like, old ICE sitting in driveway and spouse saying "when
will you get rid of that gint". Like, running main cables to battery box
and they're too short. Etc. Finish with neighbor coming over saying, "I
just picked up my new leaf today". Final shot showing the Leaf driving off.

I have driven my Leaf and made my movie. Nice car. Movies are 30 sec clip
dome on site and you have 30 days to get as many votes as you can. The one
with the most votes wins the car.

My video is kind of crummy, it was on the spot and doesn't truly show what my
projects would be for the car.

For instance, I would (try to) add cameras in the blindspots and connect
them to the computer that refreshes the computer screen in the center of the
dashboard, customized alarm system, train horns (under the hood so no
additional air drag), gain 'root' access to the computer, ecetera!

With gaining 'root' access to the computer, mods and tweaks might be able to
be made to the drivetrain, such as a larger battery pack and changing motor
behavior. Very cool stuff for an engineering student like myself.

Oh and I made some videos while at the event of the car's controls, which
include showing how much energy the heater takes, headlights, how quiet the
windshield wipers are, ecetera.

Unless I misinterpreted your clip, I don't think saying all the stuff
you want to *change* on a newly-released car would make a very
convincing argument to either Nissan or early adopters...especially if
you want to sabotage the essential benefits of an EV by adding a
pollution-spewing generator, of all things!

Like I said, the video wasn't well prepared. Only if it would safely fit
under the hood would I add a low-emissions small Honda Generator. It would
be the lowest in my list of projects.
First, transfer my HB4H train horn from my existing car to the Leaf.
Second would be research on what operating system runs on the computer and
the architecture.
Then, figuring out how to interface with the computer.
Proceeding carefully!! from there.

As someone that wants to start manufacturing extremely light electric
vehicles, this is EXACTLY the type of tweaker that I want to get a
vehicle (not in a position to give any away for free though ;-) My
dream is that somebody picks up a Twike and makes it their own, totally
pimping their ride.

These are your zealots, those that will fall in love with their vehicle
and promote the hell out of it, showing it off to anybody and everybody.
There's a guy that kitted out his white Toyota Prius like a Shuttle
Craft from Star Trek. It's marketing you just can't buy.

But as always, I could be wrong.

[email protected]

Bag & Body drop a Twike and kit it out with Spinner 'dubs? Zero on the
efficiency points (negative, actually) and not my cup 'o tea, but the
marketing to a community that I (and EV's) don't normally reach?
Priceless.

Thanks Matt Childress and anybody who has voted for me.
I only have until about 12/9/2010 to get votes, then the time is up.
Thanks everyone! If anyone wants a test drive, in live near Portland
Oregon..
