A friend of mine is looking to purchase a pickup EV. He is currently
looking at a Solectria on ebay. He would need to ship it from PA to
Kelso, WA. He is wondering what it would be like for maintenance and
how difficult it would be to change the battery pack later on. Could I
get some thoughts/feedback on it? I'm not aware of any mechanics in
town who could work on the electrical aspect of it but I may be able
to find some who would be willing to learn. I'm not a mechanic but
might end up being the one to service it if it needed something.

Hi David,

A couple of thoughts come to mind.

1. It isn't very clear what has been done to the batteries since
installation. They haven't been used much, but if they have been ignored
and nothing has been done while they were in storage, they might not be in
as good a shape as one would like. I think it would be worth asking the
seller.

2. It sounds like the truck would have 30 mile range or so. It also sounds
like it charges on 220V only. If used for commuting, it can double your
range to be able to charge at work. However, while charging on 110V is
often possible, I think it might be harder to find convenience charging with
220V. If your friend will use the truck within its range and only need
charging at home, that wouldn't be an issue.

All-in-all, I think the Solectrias have a good name. They were well done
when they were built.

Mike

Good point on the batteries. I also hadn't picked up on the 220V
charging only. It may not be a problem for him because I think he
plans on using it around his home area only. It was also suggested I
look for something in the Portland, OR area since it is only 50 miles
away. I don't know what the transport cost would be but if something
could be found closer to home those funds could go for other ev
related items.

Thanks,

You'd have to look into shipping costs. I last looked into shipping a car
when I bought my last car on eBay about 6 years go. At that time, it was
about $1000 to ship a car from Florida to Idaho. I finally found something
in Seattle which was close enough to fly and drive home. It definitely
helps to be close enough to haul it home yourself. =

When I picked up my EV, I rented a U-Haul car trailer. It was about $50 per
day. Gas for the tow vehicle was quite a bit more than that!

Was it ever driven in the winter? I've learned that east coast cars
even 10 or 15 years old may have rust issues. If you're used to WA
cars you might be suprised how much work it needs and how long it
takes to get bolts off and such -- I know I was the first time I got
what I thought was a relatively new truck from PA.
