I don't particularly trust surveys. I might not quite be a gen Y (Gen X I
think? I'm in my lower 30's) but nobody I know anywhere near my age would
rather take a train or bus than drive. It probably depends on your location
though. I'm in Michigan on the west side of the state and everyone around
here drives. There are a couple of urban areas where people likely take the
bus but driving is very dominant here, even among the younger people. I'll
grant you, I do like to use my cellphone and have other people drive. ;-)

In all likelihood cows passing gas does more damage to the environment
than emissions from current automobiles but science isn't a strong suit for
most people. Politics, on the the other hand, everyone speaks. If only
thinking for oneself were as popular as listening to Al Gore...

As for the need for a 300 mile range, it might be eroding a bit. I hope that
eventually people will come to see that you only effectively need as much
range as the longest stretch of driving you normally do. For me that's a 10
mile drive to work. I don't go much further out than that on a normal basis.
Maybe 30 miles tops. Even if I could not charge at my destination that's a
max of 60 miles round trip. Far, far under the 300 mile mark.

Me neither. Either they are self-selected so the participants chose to
participate, so you only hear from the most biased and opinionated
minority; or the pollster has carefully worded and restricted the
questions to guide the answers.

That's where I'm from, too. They drive because there *is* no mass
transit, and negligible train and bus service.

Some things we can't do anything about, like volcanoes or the weather.
But we *can* do something about cow farts or car exhaust.

Some say they can do so little, so they choose to do nothing. But that
makes them part of the problem. I choose to do something, even if it is
little. Maybe it barely helps; but it makes me feel better to be part of
the solution rather than part of the problem. And maybe it will set an
example that others will follow. And together, we *can* do something!

I think pragmatism wins over rhetoric. My brother backed over a stump,
putting a huge dent in his gas tank. It didn't leak, so he ignored it.
But he could only drive about 50 miles on a tank. He complained... but
he didn't fix it because that would cost him money. He just got used to it.

That's how I think it will work. They'll complain, but they'll get used
to it. It won't be important enough to spend money to fix.
