[EVDL] Thanks for help with electric runabout

732 Views 2 Replies 1 Participant Last post by  EVDL List
Some time ago I posted questions to this list in connection with my
project of building a short-range three-wheel electric buggy, mainly for
shopping and bringing my children to school. I received many responses
from members of this group, all helpful. I am most grateful for the time
that the experts took to answer my questions.

Best regards,
Marc de Piolenc

Did you build the buggy? If so, post some pictures and data.

Also, you included a link to a ducted fan jet redesign. With all the
improvements to motors and batteries, I wonder if this could feasibly
fly as an EV?

Not yet. Right now, I have a fairly clear idea what to look for in the
way of components. Because of where I live, I will have to design around
what is available, so I will be spending many happy hours on Sabayle
Street downtown to find out what there is.

Light electric-powered aircraft are already flying. Whether the Jethawk
could be rebuilt to give acceptable endurance under electric power is
something I am not sure of. There are actually two JH versions, the
second having an extended wingspan to compensate for the very low thrust
that Saunders found in his original prototype (turned out that only one
of the two rotors of his engine was producing power, besides the
problems with the fan design). That extended-wing version might be the
starting point for an electrification study. You might end up with
something that you could use to buzz quietly around the pattern, but
getting decent performance on electric power requires an ab initio
design, due to the high specific weight of even the best storage batteries.

Best,
Marc
