Hi,

I drove my E-Porsche in today after coming back from Myrtle Beach and it wa=

know of a tiny under dash heater i could use in the E-Porsche?

Hello Mark,

I am using a under dash heaters that I got from a independent auto parts =

store. These are known as cab heaters which hang from a bracket under the =

dash. I have two of them, one for the driver side and one for the passenge=
r =

side.

These units are only 2 to 3 inches high and mine is way back about 1 inch =

from the fire wall, so the circulated air can go into the rear of the =

heater. I use a on dash 30 amp rated switches to select which heater I wan=
t =

on.

When I was at the auto parts store, I also look through the engine water =

heaters which are made for large semi truck tractors. These are 2.5 inch =

diameter by 16 to 20 inches long rated either at 120 to 240 volts at =

different wattage. I using a 120 VAC at 1000 watt unit with a 120 vac bras=
s =

circulating heating pump that is connected to the existing hot water heater =

core.

I am using a 3 inch copper pipe with 3 inch caps solder on both ends and ha=
d =

a radiator shop solder a radiator fill cap and two pipe stubs on it that on=
e =

is connected to the pump and the other is connected to the heater core. =

This tank which is insulated with heavy foam insulation sets in the same =

position that the top tank of a radiator would set.

All the heater lines that run to the heater core, heater, pumps and tanks =

are double insulated with that good black Air Conditional foam pipe =

insulation, so as to retain the heat.

As for the cold air that is comes in which is use to temper the hot water o=
f =

a engine, I had to take my ductwork all apart and re work it so the out sid=
e =

air is block with a damper door that can close all the way and now can =

circulated the inside cab air. I find that I only need about 50 degree =

water temperature to defrost the windshields at any temperature down to 0 =

degrees.

You note, that all my heaters, pumps, and fans are rated at 120 VAC 60 hz. =

I use a on board inverter that is rated at 120 VAC 60 hz 5 Kw that I can =

select with a on dash selector switch or commercial power while the EV is =

plug in. My inverter can either run off a large 12 volt deep cycle battery =

which is also back up with a inverter-alternator which are the large semi =

truck type that can also charge the battery at voltages up to 15 volts and =

provide 110 VDC at 7 KW.

I can preheat any of these heaters with commercial power, about 15 minutes =

before I leave to 80 degrees F or more. This is enough heating for driving =

about 2 miles, let the EV set for about a hour and still have enough hot =

water heat in the tank to defrost the windshield. I may only turn on the =

driver side 640 watt heater for about a minute while driving about a mile a=
t =

0 degrees F.

Not sure if these would put out enough heat, even here
in the South.

No, The underdash heater units I am using are metal case and hard wire in.
They require 640 watts at 5.33 amps at 120 volts or 53.3 amps at 12 volts
through a inverter. You need a heavy depth cycle battery and a alternator
to run these units.

The larger one shown may work which is about 12v x 13a = about 156 watts.
It may work, if you preheat with a 12 volt battery charge on for about 60
minutes before you leave.
