1974 Volkswagon Beetle with 96 Volt Rebirth Auto Electric Vehicle conversion kit.
I originally paid about $1000 for the car and $7500 including tax and shipping for the conversion kit from Rebirth Auto in early 2009. I worked on it on and off in the third stall of my garage and got the motor, controller, batteries installed and got that working. I have since sold my house and had to move the project into a storage garage I am paying $150/month for and can't afford to keep paying for the storage space. The body of the car is in great shape structurally with pretty much no rust, just needs some paint, of course you could easily pull the kit out of this car and install it in something else if you wished. I have a clean title in my name ready to sign over and the vehicle has been registered in the State of Minnesota. Things that have been done:
- Demonstrated functionality by driving wheels of car in a garage
- Motor is attached to transmission,
- Motor controller contactor and throttle assembly has been installed above the motor
- Batteries have been placed in front and rear of vehicle and wired to controller
- Emergency stop button has been installed in dash and connected to control system
- New tires installed
- New rear suspension bushings (also raised suspension in front and rear)
- Verified headlights and turn signals are working
- Removed passenger seat and flooring (there was rust under where the original battery was so I wanted to replace the entire floor panel and didn't get around to putting a new one in)
Things that need to be completed:
- Vehicle outer body work (sand and paint)
- New passenger side floor board
- Wire battery monitoring system to batteries
- Secure front and rear batteries so they don't slide around while driving
- Connect throttle cable to throttle box
Included extra parts:

Description
This RebirthAuto 96Volt Kit is used to convert your aircooled VW or Porsche to Battery Power. This kit includes all that is needed for a straight forward installation. All you'll need is a donor car and some elbow grease, and then you'll be driving your car up to 60MPH (70 mph theoretical), for a range of 25 to 35 miles depending on your driving habits. I have this setup on my 1965 VW Beetle pictured in the background, and I drive it daily to work and back, and plug it in at night for a recharge. It is amazing how quick and smooth this Beetle drives, not to mention that the motor doesn't make a sound.... what a welcomed change. Most of what you will have to do is run wire, and find a way to safely install the batteries into the car.
This kit has all the good bits in it, from marine duty electrical hardware, to top quality maintenance free AGM batteries (that put Deep Cycle Optima Batteries to shame), to an industry recognized series wound DC motor, controller, dc to dc converter, and on board six step AGM battery charger, to a custom designed world class fully assembled motor adapter (that actually contains both a thrust and radial bearing to prevent the clutch actuation from ruining your motor bearings... find someone else who does that!!!), and to a cutting edge battery monitoring system, that will ensure your batteries get a long life.
This kit uses your existing transaxle. You just slip the motor/adapter/clutch assembly (pre-assembled for your convenience) where the gas engine once was (four bolts).
Beware of kits that remove the clutch from the powertrain and hard couple the motor to the transmission input shaft. This practice will not only make it impossible to shift gears (unless you are at a stand still) and will likely kill you gear synchros if you try to shift on the fly.
The Rebirthauto Adapter Assembly is computer designed, and CNC machined from billet 6061-t6 aircraft aluminium (see video at http://rebirthauto.com/manufacturing.html) for perfect fit and alignment. The adapter's coupling (made of 1040 steel) runs on its own trust and radial bearings to remove any stress from the motor bearings. These innovations are very important and yet have never been seen before in the EV industry.
