I believe you can only use the external device on those chargers that have CAN. Any earlier one like I have it must be done differently from the company. Not sure if the company in Sacrament still exists. If it does they can change it for you for a fee and cost of shipping to and fro. I had them give me a custom algorithm for my charger.
