My muscle car club (for my Camaro gasser) is very positive about my electric Porsche -- two of them now say they want to build electrics. The muscle car guys will say things like "I know many guys with Chevy V8s, but none with electric" or "It takes real skill to do that!" Of course, the electric car boards are overwhelmingly positive. The guys at http://www.ecomodder.com seem especially delighted with my bargain basement approach. I met a regional Porsche club guy on the Salt Flats with a heavily race modded 911 -- he was very positive and suggested I submit an article about the car. My Salt Flats club http://www.SaltFlats.com has been positive, and even put an article about my car on their web page. I haven't yet told my local Porsche club or autocross club -- I'm planning to just show up unannounced at an autocross, and hopefully place well (I usually do well with the gas car).

I've made my intentions clear on a Spitfire forum. They've been invaluable during the restoration process and I thought it'd be nice to try and inspire them to think about converting their own cars. I've gotten a lot of support from people who acknowledge that getting rid of the unreliable parts in a Spitfire is a good idea. I only had one negative-nancy, who called my conversion classless. He was told to find another thread by the other members.

I emphasized that I was starting with a rustbucket and getting it back on the road. I think most of them agree that this is a good thing, even if it doesn't break down all the time anymore.

the e30 guys aren't usually too bad, but the most active posters over there think that global warming is a scam, therefore seem to resent and piss on hybrids/electrics.. There's a few that respect the performance aspect of it but most people just think "prius smugmobile" and leave it at that.

Well in fairness, there are times when I might fit in with that kind of crowd too, but that doesn't stop me from supporting ideas like EVs or alternative energy.

Even if not for saving the planet, what some one does with a car they own is their own business.

The Fiero guys have LOVED my Fiero conversion and thought it was extremely cool as well as the Fiero conversions of 2 of my Friends. Many Fiero owners had done engine swaps to V6 or V8 engines and all of them thought the electrics were very interesting and that it was neat to do to a Fiero.

Just chiming in,

The comments on the Porsche forum about the EV conversion forum did not appear to be quite educated on the subject. Never forget that the forums made about specific brands/types of cars are made by people who like to feel the ICE rumble, listen to the exhaust notes of their car, tinker with what they know. It is emotional. Changing a major parameter may upset some or more enthusiasts. A good friend of mine which i have told about my plans for a certain car, asked me asked me why I would want do it? "Isn't it the destruction of 'that' car? " Well, yes, If you want to jump on the emotional tone, it requires to clinically kill a car. But it shall be revived with an electric 'ticker' .

Also I'd have to admit, most commercial petrol electric-hybrid cars give of the wrong message. They are either stupidly heavy, or they are designed in a way no real world gain is made by adding under powered electric motors to the transmission.

It takes someone with a free mind, a little frustration with today's vehices, a few funds and a will to make a change! :)
