Well hi there.

Never done anything electric more complicated than plugging in a toaster or connecting a car battery. Well may be a little more but not much. So while I school myself reading through this forum and post a question here and there I present to you my first baby battery which I built all by myself. Yes its true. Compared to some of the projects here it is obviously rather crude but I don't care if you laugh at it. It is my first baby and I love it.

that switch sure seems overkill. . .
I don't think so... it is designed specifically for the voltage and current involved in this application. It does have an extra set of contacts - it's a selector, not just a single-pole on-off - but the simple on-off would be the same package size with the same terminal and contact sizes.
