Ideal specs:

75 to 100 mile range
Remove stick shift
No AC needed
Heater yes
Power brakes/steering yes

Now trying to figure out optimal motor (or drivetrain) and batteries and layout.

In Charlottesville, VA

Anyone else done a VW Cabriolet here?

Food for thought:
I’d vote to keep the stick, just to have something to occasionally do, plus the clutch is a reliable driveline disconnect.
With a car this light almost any electric motor will make it fly. If you can make them fit, Tesla S modules are a great battery.

Get the stick advice, except it's my wife's car and she can't drive a stick. So....

I am also now looking at a Nissan Leaf swap. Seems like a contender as well. Once I get the engine out I can get a better idea of the space.

She doesn't need to know how to drive a stick. She just needs to be able to put it in neutral, reverse (optional), second or third. There's generally no need to shift on the go.
